If the drive was working before, I doubt you would need to update the firmware. When did this start happening, and did you make any changes to your hardware, or install/uninstall software around that time? Have you tried burning with different programs, or trying different brand of dvd's to burn?

Four months ago I had a virus on it,and I took it to the service and they changed my hard drive because they found the old one scratched!!!(don't know how this could happen!!!).Anyway...
I may have done some registry changes I read on forums but restored back. I was just hoping they would help.No success. B)
First time I got the error with Nero 7.I said it could be the software.I've installed Roxio but got the same error. And tried with other dvd burning software.I was using blank TUFFDISC DVD-RW 4x, another kind of DVD+R(doesnt say the speed),Phillips -R 16x, but now all are in the bin  .A while ago was burning about 6% then gave me the error. Now not even start to burn. :)
I have tried to clean the laser from dust with a DVD cleaner but not working.
And if I want to burn a CD there is no problem.Only with DVD's got this error. Somebody was saying to burn a CD-RW full and then to delete it,but I don't think so that would work.
Are there 2 lasers or is just one.If are 2 is possibly that the one for DVD's to be damaged. But that means it wouldn't read also the films. And the films work great.
I don't know.... Do you think is dead? If so... B)

Sorry I forgot something.
I have this problem from 4 months now. So I've tried millions of tips and tricks, and I'm not sure I have restored them all.

I'd try imgburn

with verbatim media disks

I admire your patience !
I would have tossed it & bought a new one 3 months 3 weeks 6 1\2 days ago !

I don't know where you're at but in the US DVD burners have become so low priced they really aren't worth wasting too much time on.
