Go to device manager, then check the IDE channels and that they are not currently running in PIO mode only.
If they are, that may explain why her system is running so slow. I had the same problem, it was unbelievably slow. I tried everything I could think of... every scanner, removed all start up processes, defrags, everything! Nothing worked till I realized the IDE channels were running in PIO mode and once I rectified that, everything was instantly running super smooth, the way its supposed to.
Try uninstalling the IDE channels and letting them re-install. Or check out another method on this page:

Repetitive bad DVD reads and CRCs lower your DMA transfer rates. Enough bad reads and your transfer modes will eventually be lowered down to PIO, which just doesnt cut it for multimedia, playing DVDs etc....
Hope that's where your problem lies, cos if so, its an easy fix...
