I have AVG8 (free version) anti-virus installed on my laptop, but now it will not load. I'm using Windows Vista (service pack 1), Internet Explorer7 and alse Firefox, Windows Firewall, Defender and use WinPatrol. I also have Malwarebytes anti malware installed.

I did uninstall AVG to download Zone Alarm, but think I've now gotten a virus on laptop. I've uninstalled Zone Alarm as it didn't work for me and re-installed AVG, but it will not load. So I'm now left without any Anti-virus!

update..... in preparation for receiving help, I've just tried to download Combofix (not intending to use this until told though). The download seems to take place, and I've chosen to save to Desktop, however, upon completion of download nothing is saved on the Desktop itself? I've also tried to download HiJack This to the Desktop without success! Again, the download seems to take place, but nothing saves on Desktop. Even when I choose Run, it appears to download, but nothing actually happens after that.

Can someone please help.

Kevin

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I've tried to download (even in safemode) Smitfraudfix. I'm having the same problem's though. It appears to download but nothing is saved on the Desktop. I've tried the Run option as well; same problem - it appears to go through the motions of downloading, but nothing happens! Tried saving it as abc123.exe, but nothing saves! I've tried downloading it onto a memory stick; again goes through the motions but nothing is saved!!!!

I'm getting more and more frustrated!

Do you have access to another computer? Maybe we can download it there and transfer over via flash drive...

See if you can get this tool. If the download doesn't work, we will move you to the HJT forum.

Install RootRepeal

Click here - Official Rootrepeal Site, and download RootRepeal.zip. I recommend downloading to your desktop.
Fatdcuk at Malwarebytes posted a comprehensive tutorial - Self Help guide can be found here if needed.: Malwarebytes Removal and Self Help Guides.
Click RootRepeal.exe to open the scanner.
Click the Report tab, now click on Scan. A Window will open asking what to include in the scan.
Check the following items:
Drivers
Files
Processes
SSDT
Stealth Objects
Hidden Services

Click OK
Scan your C Drive (Or your current system drive) and click OK. The scan will begin. This my take a moment, so please be patient. When the scan completes, click Save Report.
Name the log RootRepeal.txt and save it to your Documents folder - (Default folder).
Paste the log into your next reply.

Hi

I've managed to download Rootrepeal and Smitfraudfix onto flash drive and will give these a go tonight. Fingers crossed! I'll hopefully post the results later this evening.

Rigel

I've tried to copy the rootrepeal from flashdrive to desktop. The folder sits on Desktop, but nothing happens when I click on rootrepeal.exe! The smithfraudfix appears to download to Desktop, but then the Icon disappears and nothings stored!

I've tried the Kaspersky online scanner - it advises nothing found! When I try to download the trial version of Kaspersky- it goes through the process of downloading and appears to save, however, the Icon then disappears from my Desktop and I cant find it!

I'm getting desperate now.

My apologies for the delaied response.

Let's try Dr.Web

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problems. Dr-Web-CureIt appears to download to desktop, however, nothing actually saves! Therefore preventing me from carrying out any scans. It seems that any anti-virus I try to download wont save (even if I try to "Run" instead of save, the program will not load)
