Hello
I am a SF Bay Area mom who works at home designing powerpoint presentations, some for fee and some donated to schools, church, and community activities. I am very dependent on my pc. In the last six weeks or so, my pc has become very sluggish. It is so slow, that when I click, I have to wait maybe 10 seconds or more for a response. Even to close a window, it takes awhile. Also, weird things happen like a window will close by itself, or a window will scroll by itself, or the windows will blink. The other thing I've noticed is it sounds like my hard drive is sometimes working very hard when I don't think it should be. It plugs away, even when I'm not doing anything and nothing is downloading in the background. Sometimes I'm not running many programs and the CPU usage runs up to 100%. I don't get any error messages or blue screens or crashes, just the slow speed, erratic movements, and the sound of the hard drive running. The hard drive is only a year old.
So I've tried..turning off things that startup with windows, run Adware, spybot, windows defender, and Eset NOD32 virusscan and the windows Malicious removal tool. Really nothing turned up. If I restart the computer, after windows finally starts up (seems to take longer) things are more responsive for awhile (but not normal) and then it slows even more. The biggest processor running is firefox which is about 220,000K and if I am using Photoshop, that uses 80,000 and then something called AAWService.exe in my system that is about 15,000k. I have used 151 GB and have 77 GB free on my hard disk. I have backed up my data this week and tried to follow these instructions for posting.

I am running windows XP on a Sony Vaio VGC-V517G desktop. I use a Microsoft wired keyboard and logitech wireless mouse. I use automatic updates for windows so I think it is up to date. My browser is Firefox and we use wireless internet. I have installed some add-ons to firefox recently. I use Spybot and Adware, Windows Defender and Eset NOD 32 for virus removal. I also use MobileMe to update my iphone with Outlook (just installed this and began using the iphone since Christmas). I have also installed a Brother wireless printer since Christmas, in addition to my HP Deskjet that I already had. I am trying to list what changes I have made in the time when this problem developed.

I love to flip around between applications and different windows when I work, and it drives me nuts that every little click takes so long. I hope you can help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K
