I desperately need some help removing the Spy-Agent.d and Downloader-ABW trojans. McAfee says that it is deleting the viruses, but it is not. I know that there must be components of the viruses that McAfee is not removing and they simply restore themselves. I have turned off System Restore as suggested by McAfee, but still can not remove them.
This is what I have done so far:
Run the following programs: SpyBot S&D, AdAware SE (newest build), SpySubtract Pro 3.0 w/ cwshredder and Trojan Hunter 4.
None were successful. So upon restart I have run HJT. Following is my log.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

°Download AboutBuster.
Unzip AboutBuster in an own folder such as C:\AboutBuster.
Start AboutBuster.exe. Click OK, Update, Check For Update and download the updates if present.
Close aboutbuster now, because you may not run it yet, that's for later.
If You are getting an error when updating, please let me know first before you proceed with the next steps.

* Download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Download CWShredder. Don't let it run yet!

* Download this regfix: HSfix
Unzip it and place it on your desktop, don't use it yet!

°First, we will make your hidden files and folders visible.
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

* Hijackthis is still in your temp-folder and isn't unzipped, so I strongly advise to unzip it and create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

*Please reboot your system into SAFE MODE.
°To get into the Windows XP Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

*Start hijackthis and click scan and put a checkmark next to the following items:

O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing)

*Close all open windows except hijackthis and click 'Fix Checked'.

*Navigate to and delete the following files if present:

C:\WINDOWS\syslf32.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\rich\Application Data\eetu.exe

Search for next files and delete them:
(most probably present in your system32-folder or Windows-folder)

E6F1873B.DLL
D9EBC318C
D0CE0C16B1

*Go to start >run and type: services.msc and click OK
Scroll down in that list until you find the service ZESOFT
Doubleclick on it. In the window that will appear, click on "Stop" (if not greyed out) and change the Startup Type to disabled.
Click apply and OK and close all open windows.

*Start Aboutbuster and let it scan. When the scan is done and you choose exit, it will automatically create a log in the same folder where aboutbuster is in.

*Start Cwshredder and click FIX

* Doubleclick on HSfix you downloaded earlier before which is present on your desktop and when it asks you if you want to add the contents to the registry, click yes/ok

* Still in safe mode Run Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner (bottom right)

*Go to start>Control Panel>Internet Options>tab programs> and click restore websettings.

* Reboot your PC back to normal.

* Perform an onlinescan with Kaspersky OnLine and/or Bitdefender and let it delete everything it is finding.

Open notepad, copy and paste next content (bold) in it:

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\m?hta.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save this as look.bat ,choose to save as *all files and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on it and notepad will open with some text in it.
Copy and paste this in your next reply together with a new hijackthis-log + log aboutbuster which you'll find in the aboutbuster-folder

I have performed all tasks as per your instructions. I no longer seem to have a problem with Spy-Aget.d or Downloader-ABW. However, both Kapersky Online and Bitdefender say that my laptop is still infected.
Below is the text from the look.bat file and the HJT log and Aboutbuster log.

Hello,

Much better.
First I want you to temporary disable your spywareguard, because it can interfere with the fixes.
When you enable it again afterwards, make sure you allow the changes instead of blocking them.

Fix next things again in hijackthis:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\bobdj.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\bobdj.dll/sp.html#37049
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{12EE7A5E-0674-42f9-A76B-000000004D00}] rundll32.exe stlb2.dll,DllRunMain

Look if next is present and delete it:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\stlb2.dll

Can you tell me what files Kaspersky and bitdefender are still flagging?
I want to know the name of the file and most important.. the folder where it is in. :thumbsup:

Everything seems to be running ok now. However, while I was rerunning Bitdefender the application shut down and McAfee found and deleted a trojan called Downloader.ACC.
I disabled McAfee and ran Bitdefender again. It found no problems.
Below are the scan log from Kapersky which was run on 6-21 proir to todays fixes being completed. Also, below is the new HJT log run on 6-22.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\stlb2.dll was found and deleted.

Let me know if everything looks ok. I'm a little concerned about that Downloader.ACC trojan that McAfee found while I was running Bitdefender.

Thanks

Hello,

Your hijackthislog looks clean.

Can you check if next is still present and delete it?:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sdkfa.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ISTprotect.dll.tcf

I don't think you have to worry about that Downloader.ACC trojan
I'm sure that one is already gone now.

Can you also perform next?:

Open hijackthis > config >misc tools > open ADS spy
Make sure that 'ignore safe system info streams' is checked.
Uncheck Quick scan
Uncheck Calculate MD5 checksum of streams

Click scan.
Check everything that is found there and choose remove selected.

*It could be possible that this hijacker deleted some files, so check if the following are still present:

°Control.exe: Is in your C:\WINDOWS\system32. Download here when missing.

°Hosts: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC .Download here when missing.
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\Hoster
Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK. Close the program.

°Shell.dll: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 Download here when missing

°SDHelper.dll:
If you are using Spybot Search & Destroy, this hijacker can also delete SDHelper.dll.
Download SDHelper.dll.
Place the file in the Spybot Search & Destroy-folder. Most probably, this ist C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Kaspersky online and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

I want to thank you for all your help.
All seems to be fine now.
I have installed the latest version of Spyware Blaster as well as updated Spyware Guard. I am also running Trojan Hunter 4's Trojan guard along with McAfee. Hopefully this will prevent any problems in the future.
Again thank you for all of your help. Now I look forward to spending time exploring the rest of this forum and site.
