Hello. I recently had a bunch of pop-ups assail my computer. That only happened once, but following that my computer would boot up to windows, complete with wallpaper, but not run explorer. Eventually, I was able to run some programs and find out that I have an Avira warning for Dc56, and I wonder what else may be lurking. Zone Alarm has already alerted me to about 16 blocked attempts to access my computer in the time it has taken me to get this post together. I have posted my Avira report and my HT report below. Any help would, of course, be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello! :thumbup2:
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

We need to create an OTListIt2 Report
  • Please download OTListIt2 from here
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.

Hi Sam. Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this. It is greatly appreciated. Below you will find the reports you requested. They are, in order: the OTListIT report, the "extras" report from OT, and the GMER report. The GMER report took its sweet time and the formatting here appears a bit off, but I hope it serves its purpose. Thanks again.

Gmer looks good! :thumbup2:

Run OTListIt2.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wclyathm.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ehkmp.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\stvwa.ini

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL2 log

=================

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

================

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
  • Please visit the Kaspersky Online Scanner website.
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Okay. I ran the fix you posted and updated my JRE. I then tried to run the Kapesky online scanner, but ended up canceling it since it seemed to freeze up several hours into the scan. At that point the scan hadn't detected anything of note. (It may also be worth noting that I am primarily connecting via an antiquated dial-up connection.) I turned off my computer to give it a rest, and when I tried to go online again later I found that my computer wouldn't open Firefox. Instead, a Microsoft error box appeared saying I lacked sufficient resources to run the program. Obviously that shouldn't be the case. So I tried a couple of other programs and it claims the same thing for them as well, including simple programs like Notepad. I was able to run Process Explorer, but to little effect. I am currently writing this on a friend's computer. As such, I am little unsure how proceed from here. Thanks in advance.

This sounds hardware related to me. Try rebooting to see if it will boot up normally.
Can you get into safe mode?

Sure enough, a simple reboot seems to have done the trick as far the "available resource" issue was concerned. I swear I had rebooted couple of times before to no avail, but c'est la vie :) So, I'm going to try the Kapersky scan online again and get back to you once I see how that turns out. Thanks again for your assistance -- and patience :thumbup2:

Hello again. I ran the Kapersky online scan to the following result:

Thursday, April 30, 2009
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13
Program database last update: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 22:15:23
Records in database: 2101635
Scan settings
Scan using the following database extended
Scan archives yes
Scan mail databases yes
Scan area My Computer
C:\
D:\
I:\
Scan statistics
Files scanned 110440
Threat name 0
Infected objects 0
Suspicious objects 0
Duration of the scan 11:34:17

No malware has been detected. The scan area is clean.
The selected area was scanned.

That sounds good. However, during the 10+ hours it took to finish the scan ZoneAlarm had 95 alerts. Plus, I had another "available resource" error and the computer is still running very slowly, especially during boot up when it takes several minutes to get windows explorer going. Sometimes it doesn't seems as though it will load explorer at all until I task-manager my way into running some programs. So, that brings us up to speed. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again.

If you have Zone Alarm set up to notify you each and every time something tries to get in, that's not uncommon. Most people don't realize that if you are connected to the internet your computer is almost continuously being probed.

All indications point to your malware issue being resolved now. It seems to me that you might have a hardware issue, possibly some memory going bad. Instead of having me fumble around with it, your best bet is to post a new topic in the hardware forum and get some more knowledgeable advice from someone there.

Let's go ahead and clean up OTListIt and then I'll post some final recommendations for you.

Run OTListIt and click on the CleanUp button.
Reboot when it asks you to.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks for your help. I'll try and see what I can glean from the hardware side now. I ran Memtest and everything seemed ok, so we'll see what happens. Anyway, thanks again and all the best.
