I think that I contracted the conficker worm. I believe that I have removed the worm itself with bitdefender's removal tool from an alternate download site. Malwarebytes, AVG, and Windows Defender scans are coming up empty, but my browser still acts erratically and I am unable to update Malwarebytes or Windows. I don't know if this is left over from the worm or if the worm is still active.

I would appreciate any help that you might give me.

Thanks in advance,

You have a nasty infection. We will start off with Combofix.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Note to readers of this post other than the starter of this thread:
ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool which should NOT BE USED without guidance of an expert.

Please download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

The help you receive here is always free but if you wish to show your appreciation, you may wish to Posted Image.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I followed your instructions.

I downloaded ComboFix

I disabled firewall, anti-virus, and windows defender (I couldn't find it in the security center so I turned it off and disabled what it asked me to in defender itself.)

I closed all windows

I disconnected the internet.

I ran combo fix.

It displayed the filling up bar thingy to shows that its working.

Then I got the following error:

!! ALERT !! It is NOT SAFE to continue!

The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised.
Please download a fresh copy from:

Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus (Virut)

Combo fix then shut down and deleted its desktop icon.

I did that twice with the same error. I used two different links that you provided. One came up bad for me.

What do I do next?

Again I thank you for your time.

Seems I forgot that you had the Virut infection. There was several infections on your machine and that one line slipped out it seems. The DDS log shows that you have the file infector Virut. I'm sorry but you will need to format the machine.

Posted ImageVirut File Infector Warning

Your system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut and also has IRC bot functionality. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr) and also web pages (.html and .htm). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. In addition, when it infects, sometimes it will destroy the file it tries to latch onto.

For these reasons, you really can't truly fix Virut. You will need to reinstall and format the operating system on this machine. As of now, security experts suggest that a clean Reformat is the only way to clean the infection and it is the only way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, pictures etc..) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr) or any web pages (*.html or *.htm). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr or .html/.htm files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, try to avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.
