Hi. A couple days ago, our internet would make a connection but did not connect to any web sites. It'd have limited/no connectivity. Once in a while, it would connect fine for a couple minutes and then stop. We called a technical support person and said AVG Anti-virus may cause connection problems and advised we uninstall it. When it still ocurred, another technical support person recommend we remove one of our phone line filters. After leaving the phone line unplugged from our Dish Network DVR, the internet worked. But a couple days later, our desktop PC wouldn't work. I hooked up our laptop to the DSL conneciton, and it worked fine. Then I found out programs on the desktop PC - apparently only Anit-Spyware programs would not start when ran - e.g. MBAM, Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot. However, CCleaner, ZoneAlarm, Windows Live Messenger, and Microsoft Office programs run. Also, at system startup, the processes take a few minutes to start. And only Windows Live Messenger and our Network Connections appear in the System Tray, along with a Windows alert that updates are ready to install (Office XP SP3). I've run Super Anti-Spyware and Dr. CureIT via flash drive, the only way of running infection detection software. I don't have a log saved for Dr. CureIT, but it found a rootkit, a trojan.startpage, and trojan.wmaloader, and possibly a few others. But deleting/moving the files didn't change anything. Super Anti-Spyware only detected Tracking Cookies on one scan and adware.mywebsearch on another. Oh, also, when I attempted a System Restore, I get to the step to push 'Next' to begin the process, but it does nothing after several minutes, just behaves as if I never pressed the button. The PC is running on Windows XP SP3. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi. I apologize for posting again. I don't see the edit button under my previous post. I ran ClamWin and Rootkit Revealer and have attached the logs. ClamWin found a trojan called Qhost. Seems that may be causing internet connection problems. Neither apps gave me the option to fix the errors. I see Norton has some way to remove the Qhost, but wanted your opinion. And was wondering what else could be causing certain programs to not launch properly or various startup processes to not display in the system tray. I attempted to run Spybot and Ad-Aware from flash drive, but they didn't launch, only appeared in task manager. I did complete a scan with NoAdware v5.0. Didn't find the log, but it found several instances of Mirar Tooltbar and Hijacker.InternetExplorerZoneHijack, which it listed as Severe, and also an entry of Crawler toolbar that it listed as Dangerous. Thank you!

I really wish I could edit my older posts to avoid being bumped back. I've continued running scans. Perhaps unwise, as it's gotten me nowhere anyway. I was able to install the free trial of AVG Pro. Ran a scan in Normal mode. It found several cases of Win32/Cryptor, but was unable to remove the infections in iexplore.exe, WINDOWS\explorer.exe, and five instances in WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe. But I ran the scan in safe mode, and it came up clean. Also, I ran Avast during boot up and it found one infection. Then, I ran Avast in safe mode, and it came up clean. I made sure to never run AVG and Avast at the same time. I also followed the suggestion found at this post http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lof...hp/t215785.html, because my symptoms were similar, i.e. security programs not running and system restore being prevented. Following the advice, I was able to install Malwarebyte's and run a scan, of which I posted a log. I did a follow up scan that came up clean. I also ran Super Anti Spyware using the guidelines found in that post. I've also attached that log. Finally, I ran one last scan using the latest Dr. CureIT. It only found one infection that was deleted - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Snapshots2\RegUBP2b-Owner.reg infected with Trojan.StartPage.1505. It's frustrating that all scans either don't find an infection, or curing the infections they find do not repair the system. One change has occurred: I am now able to launch all security programs on the PC. But Internet still won't even attempt to connect, and system startup is slow. The hourglass appears when I mouseover the taskbar for a couple minutes. Then, finally the system tray icons appear, albeit not all of them. I have posted the latest HJT logs since running the scans, which I am done running for now until I receive advice, as they have been fruitless. I am prepared to backup all the files and reformat the drive. Thank you for your time.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi. I understand about the delay. I reinstalled windows and everything seems to be working again for now. I cloned the drive this time, so I don't have to go through all that again. Thanks so much for replying.
