I have a computer which is totally screwed up. I decided to try to fix it up, however I cannot even get it to completely boot up. The previous owner told me that the computer had lots of viruses, but other than that I have no other history on the machine.

It is a desktop running windows XP. I cannot seem to get it to start in safe mode. It is stuck in an endless loop at the desktop where the icons refresh every 60-90 seconds.

Can you help?

I got it to start in safe mode. I'm running malwarebytes anti malware right now.

ran CCleaner and attempted to run other utilities listed in the "Slow computer might not be malware" topic. Computer still will not boot up normally. I get about 10 seconds of use before the machine locks up, then refreshes. It seems like there's a problem with explorer.exe
