Alright I'll try to be as detailed as possible.

#1
When I go to a page doesn't matter what site or which broweser i use; ie, firefox, opera, Some words that shouldn't be linked are. A small window pops up with an advertisement and of course I it won't do it now. I think it was like vibrant ads or something like that.

#2
When using ie over a specific amount of time or depending on how many websites I visit (a guess) ie will start going crazy and reroute me through a ton of sites but they're sites I have been to before. Another problem with this is I haven't visited these sites since I've done a couple of destructive system restores. registry?

#3
Now this has happened only once...When I was using firefox the screen went black and was locked for awhile. I finally got task manager to come up and it said that my display properties encountered an error and had to be shut down and the screen was out of whack with huge windows and lettering.

#4
I tried to use some vpn software (hotspot) and once I get it installed I lose my internet connection and can't reconnect to the internet until I uninstall it.

#5
My yahoo mail account when viewed in any browser won't display links or text correctly. When Given a link I get this... Log in here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?act=login ------------------------------------------------ CHANGING YOUR PASSWORD ------------------------------------------------ and any text that isn't plain displays the code used to change it.

I just did a destructive system restore a week ago in the hopes that it would resolve some of these issues but it didn't help. I have a partioned drive with all my restore settings from the factory, they didn't include any cds, didn't know if this made a difference, or if some nasty's had a way to piggyback.

My comp is about to get taken to the back yard and set on fire. Seeing as I have no cash for a new one it would put me back to pen and paper and the computer lab. This stuff, as I'm sure u can tell, is over my head so any help would be greatly appreciated. hope this is detailed nough.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Sry about the mix up with the first post.

I resolved the vibrant ads issue by just using ad blockers but would like to get it off my comp.

I use battle.net which allows me to play games online. I've been having issues with lag and not being able to play games because of others in the game being affected. Not acting normally in game.

I've updated all my drivers and had a particular problem with my graphics controller. The page I was trying to access (intel) couldn't be displayed. I tried several times and after about 15 min finally got it which of course could be attributed to there site being down. It seemed really fishy.

I still can't use any vpn software.

My yahoo mail account had something weird in the signature page. Color and fonts that I didn't choose and couldn't delete were present. I disabled the signature and contacted yahoo but recieved no response.

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

* Anyone other than the originator of this thread, you would be best advised to not run combofix without guidance from someone trained in its use. It is a very powerful tool that can cause damage to your computer if used wrong.

Run comboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Also make sure you close all your browsers just before the instructions tell you to start the scanner.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hey Hoov, Just want to thank you for the time your spending on me before we get started. It's really appreciated.

The only thing I've done other than run spybot, malwarebytes, and ad-aware is delete something called troll-software in my registry. It was from veoh and i read that it was some type of data mining software.

I already had malwarebytes installed but I uninstalled, reinstalled and did another scan. I've included both logs. Something that was sorta wierd though. On the scanner it was up to like 20000 objects scanned in about 3 min. Then it started to go really slow. When the scan ended it was at about 28000. Is that normal?

About the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, the same thing happens to me. The times are a little different, but that is to be expected.

About the VPN problem try resetting the Winsock.

Download WinSockFix from here or here.

Backing up the Registry

1. Double click on WinsockXPFix.exe to open.
2. On the Winsock and TCP Repair Utility screen, click "ReG-Backup"
3. On the ERDNT Welcome screen, click "OK".
4. On the Backup to: screen, click "OK".
5. On the Folder does not exist question screen click "Yes".
6. You will see a status screen as your registry is being backed up.
7. On the Registry backup is complete! screen, click "OK" and you will go back to the main window.

Resetting the Winsock Stack

1. On the Winsock and TCP Repair Utility screen, click "Fix".
2. On the Apply the VB_Winsock fix? screen click "Yes".
3. The screen will display a status message "repair completed please reboot."
4. On the Repair Completed screen click "OK" to reboot your computer.
5. If your computer was not using DHCP, you will need to reconfigure TCP/IP.
6. You should have connectivity restored.

Tutorial with graphics

If the registry backup doesn't work, just create a restore point with system restore, and press on.

Once you have done this, try installing and connecting with the VPN again.

I got the vpn software workin. Thanks. Do you think that this has fixed all my problems? What are the odds that I still have malicious things or anything on this comp that could be causing slow load times? could that be the vpn software? I have 7mbs down but am still having to wait when loading pages. I'll check to see if my other problems are resolved.

All the evidence that you had malware, also pointed to the fact that you already had removed it. About being unable to back up the security registry entries, I am not surprised. I know ZoneAlarm really hates that, and I assume other firewalls and the like also hate having their picture taken.

About the slow loading times, that could just be a temporary fie problem.

Download and scan with CCleaner
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

Try out some page loads now and tell me how they go.

That did help on the load times. Still not great. All the pics are still taking a lot of time to load up. I also had to use that Winsockfix again to use my vpn software. Is that normal?

I don't know why I didn't notice this before but you have both AVG and Norton installed and running. You should turn one of them off. That could be causing the problems, or at least some of them.

About the VPN and Winsock fix, you should only have to run that very occasionally. I have used it maybe 4 times since I first bought XP. Try the Virus scanner thing, and test out your system and let me know how it goes.

I can't believe I didn't realize that either. Wasn't in my tray and I guess I just spaced it off. Uninstalled norton and did some surfing. Still have the load times on pics that seems slow also I was watching a divx video on supernovatube last night. I usually don't have a problem loading those type of vids. This time it wouldn't buffer or I should say buffered extremely slowly. After about 10 min it started to load like normal but with no sound. I refreshed the page for about the sixth time and it loaded like normal and had sound. Could somebody be stealing my bandwidth? If so, how do I stop it?

It is possible. Try testing it. Go to DSLreports and run a speed test. Let me know what your speed test results where, and what you are suppose to be getting.

I went ahead and tested it. Last night i tested twice and got around 3.3 mbs and about 1 on the upload speeds. The first test on the upload said the my isp was compressing the upload connection. On the second test it didn't have that error. This morning I tested it agian and it was at 2.2 mbs and didn't go to the upload test. I tested it agian and got 4.8 mbs and the same compression error on the upload speed. I'm supposed to have 7mbs. Is that on my end or my isp?
