Hello all,

McAfee keeps popping up a trojan alert every couple of minutes, and as I've watched them closely for the last few days, they seem to be the same 12 or so - over and over again. I have tried full scans using both McAfee and Spybot, and while they both indicate that they fix the problems, these trojan alerts keep showing up. My comp has become very sluggish, IE in particular.

Also, every time I restart after a scan requires it, I get the error message "Owner.exe - DLL initialization failed". I noticed that this process (Owner.exe) jumps around a bit in the task manager, especially when McAfee pops up with the alerts.

Below is my DDS. Please help!

-Jim

Hi,

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

After the MBAM scan, I was prompted to restart. When I clicked "yes" to do so, a windows error box came up saying "Owner.exe - DLL Initialization Failed" and "The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down". This keeps happening after every post-scan restart.

Also, Spybot scans keep turning up a "Win32.Agent.mds" - in case that's helpful.

Below are the MBAM log and the post-restart HiJackThis log.

Hi,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Also, I see that your Teatimer is interfering here which may explain the error after reboot.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

Please rescan with malwarebytes once again, then reboot and post the log, with a new HijackThislog.

Hi,

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Extra note: The combofix tutorial recommends to disable your Antivirus, in your case McAfee. For McAfee, I rather recommend to temporary uninstall it, because Mcafee causes a lot of problems with Combofix after reboot, this because McAfee enables again after reboot. So please temporary uninstall McAfee first, then reboot and then scan with Combofix.

Hi,

Can you run Malwarebytes once again? Then post the log in your next reply.

Looks good! Below is the new MBAM log.

Not having anything protecting my computer is making me a little nervous. However, it seems McAfee failed me on this one. Since you quite obviously know what you are talking about, what are your personal recommendations for protection software?

Hmmm,

It's a bit confusing since malwarebytes should delete these leftovers:

R2 acpi32;acpi32; [x]
R2 amd64si;amd64si; [x]
R2 ati64si;ati64si; [x]
R2 i386si;i386si; [x]
R2 ksi32sk;ksi32sk; [x]
R2 netsik;netsik; [x]
R2 nicsk32;nicsk32; [x]
R2 port135sik;port135sik; [x]
R2 securentm;securentm; [x]
R2 systemntmi;systemntmi; [x]

And I don't see that malwarebytes lists them now. Maybe you ran Malwarebytes twice.
Anyway, just to make sure, go to start > run and copy and paste next commands in the field (one by one) and hit enter after every line

sc delete acpi32

sc delete amd64si

sc delete ati64si

sc delete i386si

sc delete ksi32sk

sc delete netsik

sc delete nicsk32

sc delete port135sik

sc delete securentm

sc delete systemntmi

exit

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Everything seems to be back to normal and running much faster, including IE. The only difference I have noticed is that my "Documents and Settings" folder is missing from C:. I'm not sure if that really matters because D: is my storage drive, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

ComboFix uninstalled just fine. Am I clear to install antivirus, etc. now?

Hi,

Your documents and Settings folder is present though, because your desktop wouldn't even load if it was not. It also clearly shows the presence in the logs :thumbup2:

Yes, you can reinstall your Antivirus again.

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
