I can connect wirelessly through several other computers, but not to my nearby friend's. Other people can connect wirelessly from their system through my friend's system. My system sends him packets, but gets no responses. Any ideas?

Welcome to BC.

Please explain your situation more clearly.

1) What you mean friends system, did you mean his computer (what are the Operating systems) or his wireless network(What is model of the router)
2) Seems you pinged it, thats good. What is the address your are trying to ping.
