I picked up a trojan at a web site (an Amazon vendor, no less...). McAfee blocked it from completing whatever it does, but not before several changes were made to my XP Home system. The file McAfee detected was 9129837.exe. Web searches at Symantec and McAfee say it is low risk for home users, but the Trojan descriptions on their sites do not fully describe what it is currently doing.

Using resources from various sites, I think I removed all active content, but am left with settings made by the trojan in its attempt to thwart removal.

One change made that I have not figured out yet is how they are able to prevent Safe Mode from running. The computer boots normally otherwise, but any Safe Mode option hangs.

The trojan also made it so that exe files will not run from the command prompt, from double clicks, and right-click Open. I got regedit.exe to run by copying it and saving as regedit.com. Running IE7 and other applications from shortcuts still work.

One possible cause I found posted as a reason for the exe problem (changing HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.EXE) does not appear to be the problem because the registry entry there is the same as I see on other XP computers.

I am still looking for the Restore disk for this machine (an eMachine a few years old), so suggestions that don't require that CD are appreciated.

Any ideas?

We can try Malwarebytes...

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Important - Rename mbam-setup.exe to mwb1.bat
  • Double-click on mwb1.bat to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

It has been interesting. Between the first 2 posts, I ran a full McAfee Scan and a SpyBot scan. Both removed some contamination. I installed and ran Malwarebytes, choosing the Quick Scan option.

Malwarebytes found 92 registry keys to remove, plus a smaller assortment of other actions. In 2 cases I ran a hard drive search to see if files referenced by the key actually existed, and in both cases they did not. I specualate that McAfee or SpyBot removed files, but not the registry keys. Searching for each referenced file would have been too time consuming, so I stopped at 2.

A few keys were left over from when I manually removed Antivirus XP 2008 last year. I removed that manually using info found online.

The results for the two problems listed in the first post are mixed. I can now start Safe Mode. I can now start EXEs normally EXCEPT regedit.exe. I can still run regedit by changing the file name to regedit.com, or even renaming it editreg.exe. Something is keying on the EXACT filename of regedit.exe.

I will run a full scan using Malwarebytes this evening and will post again if there is a change.

At the end of this posting is the result of my full scan.

Regedit.exe now runs from the command prompt.

I considered buying Malwarebytes Anti-Antimalware, but during checkout (at cleverbridge.com, a site based in Germany) I read their unfriendly Privacy Policy.

Collection and Processing of Personal Data
...Should a contractual relationship be entered, your data will, upon your request and after the contractual relationship has been fully executed, be blocked from further processing and deleted after the mandatory storage periods defined in tax and commercial legislation have passed.
...Furthermore, the information collected from you upon visiting our website may, subject to your consent, be merged into a user profile in order to provide advertising that is personally tailored to you.

This is opt out, and you cannot opt out until the 'mandatory storage' period ends, however long that is. I found no links on the main website about Privacy Policies or how to opt out.

I appreciate your help, but I wonder what the point of another round of downloading and scanning is. Your cut/paste text doesn't say. The symptoms that prompted my original post are gone.

Do you think there is more to find?

Malwarebytes is an excellent scanner, but it isn't perfect. The really isn't one scanner that can handle all issues caused by infection. The use of multiple scanners makes sure nothing is left on an infected computer. I usually scan with a minimum of two programs, and then scan with a stand alone antivirus program. If those show clean, generally, all is well.
