The initial effect of the virus was to redirect Google search links, disable Spybot and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and prevent System Restore from working. I ran ComboFix, everything looks clean, and the browser is running properly. I am concerned that the virus hasn't been eliminated completely, because there is a registry entry that cannot be deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\gxvxcserv.sys), and the files quarantined by ComboFix are still on my C: drive.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

I still think that ComboFix worked (at least in part). I do not have the Google redirect problem and have no other issues that I am aware of. Just want to make sure the system is actually clean before turning System Restore back on.

Here is the DDS log (Attach.txt is attached):

Hi

It's not recommended to run ComboFix unsupervised. Please post contents of c:\ComboFix.txt file back here since you had run CF.

Hi

Please run ComboFix again and let it update when asked for a permission. Post back its log & a fresh dds.txt log contents (re-run DDS to get one).

Having some trouble with this now. There is an error when running ComboFix: "Some files could not be created. Please close all applications, reboot Windows and restart this installation." This happens again even after a reboot.

Here is a new DDS log:

Hi

Download a new copy and make sure you have Antivir, ThreatFire and Spybot disabled before doing that. Then try to run ComboFix again. Let me know how it goes.

That does not seem to be working. I have a couple strange issues. I cannot save ComboFix.exe to my Desktop--I get an "access is denied" message in Windows Vista. I have tried adjusted the User Account control settings, and I'm not sure that is the problem. If I change the name of the file before I download (to test.exe) I have no problem. If I change the name of the downloaded file to ComboFix.exe, it will not run and I cannot delete it. But if I leave it named differently (test.exe) I can run it.

Regardless, I still have the same problem with the new download--"Some files could not be created. Please close all applications, reboot Windows and restart this installation."

Hi jma13,

Let's try by renaming the file before it has been saved any local location.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a fresh dds.txt log so we can continue cleaning the system.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

I can save and run Combo-Fix.exe, but I continue to get the error ("Some files could not be created. Please close all applications, reboot Windows and restart this installation.") I have tried to end all tasks and still get this error. Same thing after a reboot.

Once I click out of the error, ComboFix stays open with a full green bar (not moving at all). Nothing happens though.

Hi

Download GMER and save it your desktop:
  • Extract it to your desktop and double-click GMER.exe
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log in your reply.

Are you able to run renamed ComboFix in safe mode?

I am going to try to run ComboFix in safe mode and I will edit my reply to update. Meanwhile, here is my GMER log--it found a system modification due to rootkit activity. I could not paste the contents and post them because it was too long, so I am attaching a txt file.

EDIT: ComboFix ran in safe mode. There were several "Access denied"-type messages while it was running. Also, Windows came up with several "closing program" dialogs--some kind of computer stability feature I think (sorry, very unfamiliar with Vista and I do not understand most of the new features). I wonder if I have to right-click ComboFix and "run as administrator."

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into Combo-Fix.exe. You'll be asked to submit some samples. Please, follow the given instructions to carry out submitting successfully.
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
