This started out as Aurora but I'm no longer sure what it is. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hello widsithgrey and welcome to the BC forums. I'm not sure exactly what this is either but we do have some items to clean up. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8F096A66-D389-FC7E-D549-881D823413CC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jmp.dll
O2 - BHO: BHObj Class - {8F4E5661-F99E-4B3E-8D85-0EA71C0748E4} - C:\WINDOWS\wsem303.dll
O2 - BHO: WinStat - {EE02B99B-1D55-48bc-B8DB-649A42CE45F6} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinStat12.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows DLL Services] C:\syswin32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ncdmbg] C:\Program Files\Hpeivn\Xwmczsm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msxct] msxct.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Internet Optimizer] "C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer\optimize.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [uvoad] C:\WINDOWS\System32\uvoad.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Program Files\apsi\wtta.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Iigmhvam] C:\WINDOWS\System32\m?hta.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)
O16 - DPF: NDWCab - http://www.neededware.com/ndw3.cab
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/MediaAcc.../bridge-c15.cab
O16 - DPF: {7C559105-9ECF-42B8-B3F7-832E75EDD959} (Installer Class) - http://www.xxxtoolbar.com/ist/softwares/v4...006_regular.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\jmp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinStat12.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msxct.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\uvoad.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wsem303.dll
C:\syswin32.exe
C:\Program Files\Hpeivn\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Media Access\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\apsi\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix", "clean" or "autoclean". If you have any files that cannot be disinfected or quarantined automatically then delete them manually.

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Also, do you know what mushclient.exe is used for? I oculdn't find alot of information on it and am not familiar with it.

Okay, things seemed to be better now. I think I got rid of pieces of something much bigger (or several viruses, perhaps?) and this helped to wipe out the rest.

It was leaving pop-ups after so much time but was gone for 7 hours for work and no pop-ups so that's a good sign. First time this computer has been infected like this since I bought it two years ago.

Mushclient is a program that allows you to play MUDs, connecting to their servers for you, have different options to use for the MUD and most compress to use less bandwidth. I only use it for a few triggers, aliases, compression, saving logfiles, and of course it's much better than using the java program available on my MUD's website. I don't use it for its purposes nearly as much as other people do (in terms of scripts) but I use it everyday.

Hope that answers your question! You've been very helpful, and I'll stick it out a few days to see if anything else seems to be problematic.

Thank you!

Hi widsithgrey. The log looks better but we still have something hiding in there. Let's do the following.

Step #1

Update Ewido and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Process Manager button
Find the following items and click on each one to select it and then click on the Kill Process button to stop the process.:C:\WINDOWS\System32\m?hta.exe
Step #3

Now in HijackThis click the Back button and then click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Iigmhvam] C:\WINDOWS\System32\m?hta.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Program Files\apsi\wtta.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

WinXP Show Hidden files/delete files

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\apsi\ <--folder

Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode just stay in Safe Mode until I tell you to reboot normally.

Step #5

Start ewido and click on the Scanner button. On the Scanner page click on My Computer and then click the Start button to begin the scan. Let it run to completion and fix anything that it finds.

Step #6

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi widsithgrey. Your log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any further problems?

I don not see any anti-virus program running onthis computer. An anti-virus program is your first line of defense against all of the internet and email infections out there today and it is very important to have one installed and to keep it updated. See the information below regarding free anti-virus applications available for personal use. I highly recommend getting one installed as quickly as possible on this machine.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Okay, Everything was going alright for awhile there. A few days ago, the only programs I had open were mushclient, and probably winamp and aim (no downloading was going on.) I started having some popup trouble, and the firewall was getting on my nerves, and suddenly my taskbar started acting weird.

At first, I couldn't even get it to show, but I can now use Quick Launch at least. However, programs are not showing. I can still access programs through alt-tab or the task manager, but they are not showing on the taskbar. While this is really just a problem of inconvenience I'd still prefer to fix it.

Do you know why this might be?

I've done a few scans. To be honest, I try to keep as few programs as I can and it really bothers me to have so many virus scanners and spyware programs recently.

I've also tried comparing my older HJT log with a current one, but that hasn't improved the taskbar problem, so I'm not so sure how much this will help:

Oh! Also, my computer is periodically attempting to reboot itself, and it never did this before. These problems started around the same time.

Hi widsithgrey. Oh yeah. You've picked up a new infection so let's clean it up.

Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: NLS UrlCatcher Class - {AEECBFDA-12FA-4881-BDCE-8C3E1CE4B344} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvms.dll
O2 - BHO: CB UrlCatcher Class - {CE188402-6EE7-4022-8868-AB25173A3E14} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mscb.dll
O2 - BHO: ADP UrlCatcher Class - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msbe.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BullsEye Network] C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\bin\bargains.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CashBack] C:\Program Files\CashBack\bin\cashback.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ydbf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\W?nSxS\rundll.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: DateTime - C:\WINDOWS\system32\thpmon.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.

So I wasn't able to find the majority of what you told me to delete, and that doesn't sound good. The taskbar problem hasn't changed, though it stopped trying to reboot itself for awhile there and is doing it again.

Hi widsithgrey. Well, those are gone and now you have something else. Let's do 2 things here.

1 - I see no anti-virus on this computer. Since you are continuously picking up new infections we need to get one installed. Pick one of the following and download, install, update and run a full system scan:2 - Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here alond with a new HijackThis log so I can review them.

Hi widsithgrey. Ok, we have some things to clean up here so let's get to work.

Before you proceed with the following directions can you do me a favor and zip up the following file and email it to me at olddtimerATmail2technician.com (yes there are 2 d's in olddtimer. Replace the AT with the @). it appears that this might be a new variation of this infection and I would like to send this to some others for evaluation. Thanks. Here is the file to zip and send:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\guard.tmp
Print these directions or copy/paste them into a Notepad document and save it to your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

It appears that you have an L2M infection. Please do the following:
  • Download l2mfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing the Enter key.
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, Notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log and a new WinPFind log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the new L2m logs back here along with a new HijackThis log and a new WinPFind log and I will review the information when it comes in.

OT

Finally, the WinPFind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi widsithgrey. the log is looking MUCH better. The L2M infection is gone. We still have a Qoologic infection and I need you to run a new WinPFind log. The post got too long and the entire WinPFind log did not get posted. When I get that we should be able to finish things up quickly  .

Cheers.
