Hello to all the virus/malware forum gurus. :)

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop, with Windows XP SP3, I use Firefox 3 for internet browsing, I am using the XP built in firewall.

I was infected by the Antivirus 2009 Malware/Virus thing. I found some directions on a different website on how to remove it. I installed Malwarebytes, AVG Anti-Virus Free, Spyware Search & Destroy and Free Window Registry Repair and ran them all on the advise of the other folks. I already had CCleaner and Windows Defender installed and running, they did not find this virus and did not help fix it.

After much trouble running the Malwarebytes, the virus was apparently keeping me from installing it and running it, so the other folks directed me to a work around by renaming the .exe files and then it was installed and I was able to run it. It found a few things and I cleaned them up.

So I was quite happy after spending a day cleaning and fixing the laptop. It all seemed clean and happy.

Well I am not so happy, it is not fixed. It is running very slow and I am often having the browser redirected when clicking on links from the Google search page. I have never used the AVG Anti-Virus, so could that be slowing my browsing down? I know it puts green check marks on my Google search results, could it be redirecting my browser?

I did visit the Slow Computer/Browser topic and followed some of that advise, the CHKDSK scan from the Recovery Console, Defraged the drive, ran DiskCleaner, and ran the System File Checker. I also looked in the Device Manager for problem entries but found none. I disabled the ctfmon.exe and looked for the mdm.exe but did not find it running on this computer. All these things did not improve performance or fix the browser redirect.

I do not know a lot about the AVG Free, all that I have read about says it is good, but maybe it is not so good. I am now worried that I received bad advise from the other folks at the other forum, I was directed to this forum by a computer smart friend. I have run the DDS scan and am posting the logs here:

Ok I am taking a chance at forum scorn and angst by bumping my own topic.

I know it will put me back at the end of the line, but since this was on like page 60 and many posted dated after mine are being helped I figured I would take a chance.

Thank you to the hard working volunteers that monitor these forums and help poor pitiful computer folks like me. Hope I am not going to make anyone too mad.

I still have the same issues as the OP and have not done anything to fix it or changed anything.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K

BTW - The Staff see a different HJT log listing - not what you see on the forum.
Ours is from the oldest post down to the newest.

Thank you for the reply. :thumbup2:

The issues I am having is my Firefox redirects when I do Google searches to random websites. Also when I type the computer is very slow to respond, it takes a long time for the characters to appear after I type them. Also programs just close without warning and for no apparent reason. I also still occasionally see the Anti-Virus 2009 pop-up in the lower right corner of my computer.

Here is the new DDS scan logs:

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you.

I still see some evidence of infection.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Download and Run Scan with GMER
We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.

Please download GMER to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  • Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  • Double click the GMER program ******.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  • You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  • Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.
Please include the log in your next reply.

In your next reply include:
-the ComboFix log
-the GMER scan log

Please also tell me of any changes you have made to your computer since you started your topic.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Looks like the infection was taken care of. Just some leftovers.

Posted ImageBackdoor Threat
I'm sorry to say that your computer was infected with one or more backdoor trojans.

This means that sensitive information could have been stolen. I would advise to change any passwords for any accounts that you have accessed with the infected computer using a clean computer ASAP. If you have used this computer for banking, I would strongly suggest that you report the possible stolen information. Please do not use the computer for any further transactions, or to enter any other information, if at all possible, until it is declared clean.

You may want to read this article on how to handle identity theft.
You may also want to read this article regarding preventing of identity theft.

This computer can still be cleaned, however, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% safe even after disinfection.

Please read When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall.

I will proceed assuming you wish to disinfect. If you want to do a reinstall, reply back saying so.

Make sure TeaTimer is disabled. To disable SpyBot's TeaTimer:
  • Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  • Click Posted Image and then on "Advanced Mode"
    Posted Image
  • You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Uncheck this checkbox:
    Posted Image
  • Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy
Run ComboFix with CFScript
We will run ComboFix again with a script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open notepad (Start>Run>"notepad") and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:
    File::
    c:\program files\temp995.bat

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-]
    "Kmizu"=-

    Driver::
    SC0CLPT
    cpuz128
    rzmcmsvc

    NetSvc::
    rzmcmsvc
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)
    Posted Image
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Post back with that log.

Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Update Java to Version 6 Update 13
Your current version of Java is outdated. Malware creators can exploit the lesser security of older versions. Please uninstall your current version through Add/Remove Programs. Remove all instances of Java, J2SE Runtime, Java Runtime, and Java Runtime Environment. Restart your computer after uninstalling.

Please download the installer here. Choose "Windows".

Delete the installer after use.

Download and Run ATFCleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program will clear out temporary files and settings. You will likely be logged out of the forum where you are recieving help.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select Run As Administrator.
  • Under Main Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
F-Secure Online Scan
Please run F-Secure Online Scanner.
This scan is for Internet Explorer only.
  • It is suggested that you disable security programs and close any other windows during the scan. While your security is disabled, please refrain from surfing on other sites. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Go to F-Secure Online Scanner
  • Follow the instructions here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs, click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically. The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and copy the entire report in your next reply.
  • Be sure to re-enable any security programs.

With Regards,
The Panda

:step4: Wow this is not good. :) Thanks for finding this trojan! We changed all the passwords and have stopped using the infected computer. Hopefully we can clean it and we will not have to do a reinstall. :step1:

Hello.

Looks good. Please give me an update on the symptoms. Are the redirects still occuring?

:) The redirects are not happening anymore. :step5: Programs are no longer closing for no reason. :step4:

The typing is still slow. Takes time for characters to appear after typing them. So that is weird. :step1: I can deal with that as long as I got rid of all the nasty buggers.

Thank you for all your help! This was awesome and you were very prompt and friendly. :thumbup2:

One question, all those little programs I downloaded, can I delete them or remove them?

Hello.

Looks good. Unless there are any issues at the moment, we can wrap up.

We'll remove those programs. You can manually delete any left after.

Uninstall ComboFix
Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Click on your Start Menu, then Run....
  • Now type the following into the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the "x" and "/".
    ComboFix /u

    Posted Image
Uninstalling ComboFix will do the following:
  • Delete ComboFix and its components from your computer.
  • Delete other tools commonly used during the malware removal process.
  • Resets clock settings to standard format.
  • Hides file extensions and hidden/system files.
  • Clears System Restore cache and creates new restore point.
Preventing Malware Infection in the Future
Please take some time to look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections: For general slowness problems that you may have, take a look at Slow Computer/browser? It May Not Be Malware. Read How to use the Startup Database to identify and disable uneeded processes and increase the amount of available resources.

Do you have any questions or concerns?

The Panda

Is there anything that we did that would be making my computer delete all the cookies and clear the cache every time I close Firefox?

I checked the FF browser options and the boxes that say to clear cache and delete cookies when closing FF are NOT checked.

I do not want to have my cookies and cache gone every time. :thumbup2:

Hello.

No, we did not. Did this just start happening?

You may want to post a topic in the Internet Browsing Applications Forum for that.
