Can someone please help me get my computer back to normal. I recently got the Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c virus (Antivirusgold) strand.

I've tried to follow the directions of people that have had a similar problem, but with only little success.

I still have a blank blue screen with no icons and no task bar. I have to run all my programs from task manager.

Also, upon logging on to windows I get the message: "Explorer.exe Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly(0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."

Here is my hijackthis log:

Hi erikj_100.

You have the symptoms of Trojan.StartPage.O

Download FixO from http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/FixO.exe

Double click on FixO.exe which is a self extracting zip file. Click browse to choose an install location for the FixO folder.
Open the FixO folder and double click to run fixO.bat
Your script blocking service may give a warning, please allow it to run.
When it finishes, click enter to continue.
Copy the contents of check.txt that opens and paste it into your next reply here.

In taskmanager, click file then new task, type in explorer and click OK.
If explorer does not start, open the fixO folder and double click restore.reg and OK the prompt to merge to the registry.
Your script blocker may give a warning, please allow it to run.
Try starting explorer again.

Were you successful in starting explorer?

Scan with hijackthis and post a fresh log and the check.txt from fixO.

Well, at least that rules out startpageO.

Let's try the windows system file checker to see if it will replace the copy of explorer.exe from the dllcache folder.

In taskmanager, file > new task, type in sfc /scannow and click OK.
Allow it to run and see if that helped.

You have two entries that need to be fixed in hijackthis, but probably not related to the explorer problem.

Scan with hijackthis and place a checkmark at the following lines:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close all browsers and open windows, except hijackthis, and click fix checked.

These files may be already removed, but check for them and delete if found.
ShowWnd.exe
ALCMTR.EXE

No path is given and you can't run search, so look for them in these folders by clicking browse in the taskmanager new task box:
C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\system32

If you are unable to find them, change these settings to view system and hidden files. From taskmanager, click file > new task, type in control panel
In control panel, open folder options
Click on the View tab
Place a checkmark at "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"
click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
Check again for the files.

Please post an update on the explorer problem and a fresh hijackthis log.

Hi,
I had a little success, but the main problem still remains. The successful part was that I was able to find

ShowWnd.exe
ALCMTR.EXE

in my Windows folder (and deleted them, then ran CleapUP! to get them out of my recycle bin)

I also ran a sfc /scannow on my computer, and after scanning for about 10 minutes, the box filled up with the blue wait line and disappeared, so I guess the windows files are intact?

I still dont have my desktop items or task bar and get the same Explorer.EXE Application Error and message upon startup.

What's the next step?
Thanks for your continuing support.

One of the experts here, miekiemoes suggested this fix.

Browse to C:\windows\system32\wininet.dll and rename it to wininet.old
Reboot.
Normally, after renaming the wininet.dll to wininet.old, a good wininet.dll gets replaced from the dllcache.

If nothing has changed after reboot, replace the wininet.dll manually (copy/paste) with the one present in the C:\Windows\system32\dllcache or C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 or C:\i386 to the C:\windows\system32\ folder. Answer yes to the promt to overwrite the copy in system32.

You may need to change these settings to make hidden and system files visible:
From taskmanager, click file > new task, type in control panel
In control panel, open folder options
Click on the View tab
Place a checkmark at "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"
click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
Check again for the files.

Next, delete oleadm.dll in the C:\windows\system32\ folder.

Did that help?
