My Excel fails to take the latest MSoft security update. Also whenever I launch it, it goes through the install process. Everything worked perfectly for years. This just started about one week ago. No identified indication of virus or spyware, I think I'm pretty well protected.

Further info - it's KB959995. I'm getting an Error 0x57A. Indications are somehow the registry entry needs permissions modified. Don't have time now, but will jack with it later.

However any insight anyone has is well appreciated.

Any thoughts?

Many of the updated versions of various malware scan tools have an application to prevent registry changes
Spybot S&D has Teatimer, for example
Try updating in Safemode w/networking

My experience with this failure was associated with missing permissions. I am using Vista Home Premium and Office 2003 and experienced a KB959995 update failure. In November 2008 I had the same problem with KB957832 and KB955466 which I found a way around after trying many, many recommended fixes which all failed to resolve the problem.
Using the same process I used then I downloaded the full KB959995 update - office2003-KB959995-FullFile-ENU.exe - and ran it. It failed due to an access denial to a registry key. This was the same type of failure I experienced in November. On going to the key I found it had no permissions set - I set permissions as administrator and reran the executable and it failed on another registry key - kept doing this for about 30 times putting permissions on each key until KB959995 ran OK.

I have not had any problems with Windows updates between November and KB959995.

I do not know why these registry keys lacked permissions. Hope this helps.
