My computer was nearly unusable when drwtsn32 repeatedly cycled with restarting the console MS Explorer.
I was running McAfee which didn't seem to find anything and then installed TrendMicro which didn't find anyting.
I disabled drwtsn32 (not knowing much about how to proceed) and now the computer has a runtime error 216 in MS Explorer at startup.
After that, the computer seems to run fine, but now I can't print.
So, I am worried that there is an infection.
Please help!

Here is the HJT log.

It turned out that printing was not a related problem. Sorry for that misinformation.
However, I still am getting the runtime error 215 in explorer at start up.
I still am not running drwtsn32 (having removed aedebug from the registry).

I have not solved the problem.

I don't see any "steps below". The problem and previous steps I performed are described in my original post.

Since that post, following suggestions from another user, I used autoruns and found an unidentified entry in

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad

The entry was:

Publisher none shown.
Path C:\Windows\system32\cakuesiq.dll
Description systray
Entry None shown.

Google of "cakuesiq" returned nothing. (I would have guessed Google had something for every 8 letter combination.)

I quarantined the file and removed the entry. It seemed to have no effect, i.e., the problem with error 216 upon MS Windows Explorer startup persisted, but the removal appeared to cause no problem. (The computer seems a little faster, but that may be my imagination.)

The instruction to "take note of some guidelines for this fix" was not clear.
It was not clear that by referring to "the steps below" and "the fix", your post was instructing me to provide another log rather than to follow some steps to fix the problem that I documented in my original post..

Here is another log.

Hello again.

It was not clear that by referring to "the steps below" and "the fix", your post was instructing me to provide another log rather than to follow some steps to fix the problem that I documented in my original post..

I see. The "fix" was referring to EVERYTHING we are going to do in this thread to remove any infections if there are any. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for bringing it up as I can change it afterwards, to help make it more clear :thumbup2:

> From what I have reasearched on what you have described and from the logs, there appears to be a nasty infection. We'll confirm this soon.

I understand that ComboFix is intended to help identify (and correct) the problem and I greatly appreciate your assistance (understanding that there are many, many possible infections and that diagnosing problems remotely is challenging), but I'm wondering if you can tell me any more about what "nasty infection" you suspect and what in the logs is indicative of an infection.

I am a little cautious because neither MacAfee nor Trend Micro identified an infection (which of course doesn't mean there isn't one) and because when I clicked the link to download ComboFix, I got a message that says: "Website blocked by Trend Micro Internet Security. This Web page has been identified as Dangerous. For your own safety, please close this web browser window now and never return to this website."

I hope you don't mind telling me a little more about what you suspect at this point. Thanks.

Hello.

Regarding your AV detecting and alerting that webpage is dangerous is a false-positive.

Since you don't feel comfortable using Combofix, we can manually remove some of those files. There are a few files that look suspicious also you said in your initail post that "runtime error 216 in MS Explorer at startup." that also leads to a bad sign.

Running Comofix won't hurt but do not think that Combofix is a "bad" tool as it's a good tool but is flagged by many anti-virus and other security programs because there are certain tools or files it uses that AV programs suspect as bad. Likewise, any tool can be used for malicious purposes.

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Yes. I'm still here, just busy with finals this week.
It may be a few more days until I can follow your instructions.
I hope that's okay. Thanks again.
