Posted this over on Computer Cops yesterday, but it's like a 70% off sale on women's clothing over there ...

Anyway, here's my cut n' pasted problem:

Hello ... first time poster here. I have been solving issues on my own via the helpful utilities and posts, but it appears that I now need some additional assistance. My IE browser is basically useless (posting this via Netscape). It starts out with the about:blank homepage and then changes itself into www.searchmeup.com. Trying to then go to different websites in IE often yields "404 - Website not found" messages. Also, when attempting to use the Windows Update website, the auto scanning process returns the following. (My PC date/time is accurate)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in your computer's time setting.
To check your date and time setting:
On the taskbar, double-click the time.
Verify that the date and time is correct.
You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update.
Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0008)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also have noticed occasional popup windows with the message "Modem Not Found" ... even when my network connection has been disabled. Spybot S&D reports 9 registry problems referencing CoolWWWSearch.Cameup. I've deleted these entries several times, but there is obviously a source file I'm missing. I've also deleted these entries using HijackThis and CWShredder, but again, I must be missing something as they keep coming back. (I reboot after cleaning the issues).

I also recently installed and ran AdAware 6.0, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard with no effect on this issue.

Below is the output of my HijackThis log. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

You are infected with a variant of the CoolWebSearch.

Download CWShredder from the below link and unzip it into a directory. Start CWShredder and click on the FIx button to

have it remove all CWS infections it finds.

Download CWShredder from:

http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double click on the

cwshredder.exe to start the program. When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an

new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the

"Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

To get the best results it is recommended that you run it in safe mode. Reboot windows and press F8 at boot/windows startup,

usually right after the beep. Then select safe mode.

A tutorial that goes over this process step by step can be found here:

How to remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder

Once that is completed you should follow these steps in order to clean your computer of

Malware which can include Viruses,

Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Hijackers and Dialers

Step 1:
Download Spybot and Adaware from the following locations and install them. You should run both programs and clean up

what it finds. This is to gaurantee that you find the most malware you can installed on your computer.

Before running the scans on both programs, it is mandatory that you update the programs. There are update options in

each program when you run them.

Spybot

Ad-aware

If you would like to learn more about how to use these two programs with the proper settings you can read the tutorials below

:
  • AD-AWARE- Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware/Hijackers from Your Computer.
  • SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY - Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer.
When you scan with both programs, fix everything that it finds.

When you are done with the scan and fixing the items. Please continue with the next step.

Step 2:

It is important that you run Spybot and Adaware before you proceed with this step. Fixing enties with Hijackthis may leave

behind unwanted files on your computer if the previous step was not done first.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will

not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program. Click on the Scan button and when it is

finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on

Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post, and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

To see a tutorial on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:

How to use HijackThis to remove Browser Hijackers & Spyware

Thanks for the reply. OK, I rebooted into SAFE mode and followed your instrructions:

1. Ran CWShredder / FIX and deleted the items it found.
2. Ran Spybot S&D ... no reports of any problems.
3. Ran AdAware 6.0 (all scanning options activated) ... deleted 3 problems.

Note: I have the latest / greatest updates to all these programs.

I then rebooted normally and went into Internet Explorer. I could tell that something is still wrong as I still cannot access many websites ( like Yahoo Mail ) ... and I still have the "Modem Not Found" popup window Here's the latest HiJackThis log:

Thanks for the reply. OK, I have done some of what you requested. I could not disable System Restore per those instructions as my O/S is Win 2000 Pro ( not ME or XP ). I did check around, but saw no comparable panels.

I booted into SAFE MODE, ran HijackThis and deleted the indicated lines. I then ensured all hidden and system files were visable and looked for the suspected executables. I could only find :

C:\WINNT\runwin32.exe
C:\WINNT\wininet32.exe

I deleted these and then emptied the Recycle Bin. I reran SpyBot S&D for good measure and then rebooted normally. On reboot, my Spyware Guard reported a change in my IE homepage from www.google.com to about:blank. My Internet Explorer is now showing any and all websites as "Cannot Find Server". I've gone into the Tools / Internet Options and deleted all Cookies, Files and History. No effect. My Netscape browser is obviously still working fine.

Here's the new HJT log:

My bad for not noticing you had windows 2000. Windows 2000 does not have system restore.

Fix these

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:8080
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = local

Restart internet explorer and tell me if it is working now.

Booted into SAFE ... ran HijackThis and deleted the two lines.
Rebooted normally. Spyware Guard still reporting on bootup that my IE homepage was requested a change from www.yahoo.com to about:blank. I replied to keep the original settings.

Started IE and still get "Cannot Find Server" for all websites.

Next HJT log:

OK here the deal. I do not see a single thing wrong with the log, and that is probably because SWG is blocking its attempts to alter the registry.

This may be causing a problem removing it as I dont know what to tell you to remove. I would suggest letting the hiacjker go through with its changes so at least we know what we are dealing with.

Well on the next reboot, SG did not report any attempted changes. So, I attempted the following:

1. Tried to uninstall IE ( via Control Panel / Remove Windows Components ). This did not appear to do much.

2. I then went to the microsoft website and downloaded IE 6 + Service Pack 1 and reinstalled all components.

3. On reboot, SG reported an attempted change for IE's homepage to the microsoft website. I said OK to the change. However on starting IE, the default is still Yahoo.com.

IE is still not functional. HJT log is the same. This is not looking good.

Give me another hijackthis log please.

I am wondering if spywareguard is innocently making it hard to diagnose this by blocking certain behaviour automatically.

If you are willing, I want you to remove spywareguard, reboot, post another hijackthis log. If everything looks good, we will reinstall spyuwareguard.

I see nothing at all wrong with that log. Are you still having problems connecting to the Internet with IE? Run CWShredder for good measure, though I doubt you will find anything. Also go into Tools , then Internet Options, then connections, then lan settings and make sure there is no proxy configured, which I am sure there is not.

When you check IE, try to go to a few different sites. If you still cant get anywhere I want you to run LSP-FIX and read me the dll's found in the Keep section.

Tutorials on LSP Fix here:

LSP-Fix - Using LSP-Fix to remove unwanted LSPs from your computer.

Ah HA! CWShredder reported nothing, but ...

When I went to IE / Tools / Internet Options / LAN Settings, I found that the Proxy Server flag was checked ( no address though ). I unchecked this and can finally access the internet with IE !!!!

For good measure, I did download LSP and here are the dlls in the KEEP section:

rnr20.dll
winrnr.dll
nwprovau.dll
msafd.dll
rsvpsp.dll

Hopefully nothing is wrong here. Thanks for all your help!

Excellent!!!!!! Got me worried we wouldnt be able to figure this one out!

Those dll's listed in LSP-Fix are all fine to have.

Great job!
