Help! Reinfections keep coming

Hi --

I'm a new member and am looking for some help. I keep cleaning my computer, but I keep getting infections a few days after. How can I know if my computer is really clean and how do I protect myself beyond what I have done below?

Windows XP SP3 (windows firewall is on)
Running SA 10.1.5
Scan with AD-aware, SUPER AntiSpywayre and Malwarebytes (all free editions, updated and used regularly)

Malwarebyets finds the infections while the other two do not (trojan.dropper, Stolen.data, etc.). I boot to safemode and use
Malwarebyets scan to make sure system is really clean once I find an infection. But a few days later I always seem to get re-infected.

Any advice would be great. I'm assuming that there is something on my system that I can not find. I do have two other laptops that are networked, but when I clean, I clean all three. So I don't think they are re-infecting this computer (Another reason is that the desktop computer gets re-infected when the laptops are not on the newtwork).

Any help would be appreciated. What logs should I post?

Hello and welcome. Let's start here.

Rerun MBAM

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates,when done
click Scanner tab,select Quick scan and scan.
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks. I'm not being re-directed anywhere at the moment.

I found an copy of Trojan.dropper eariler today and that was the last straw (one in a long list this week; all cleaned with MBAM). I cleaned it and posted here for help. Here is the SmitfraudFix log:

Hi you look prety good, let;s just run part 2.. afterward take note if your clock had=s changed tpo a military format.
You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Hi ,it's a ometimes side effect of the tool. Since you look clean now ,we'll fix that and mop up.
o fix the clock display:

Go toStart >> Control Panel.
Select Regional and Language Options.
In the Standards and Formats section... next to the language you are using... click the Customize...button
Press the Time...tab.
In the Time Format...box, for 12 hour time display... change the format to:

h mm ss tt
or
hh mm ss tt


Select the other display options you want... separator, AM, PM...
When done...click Apply and OK as needed.


Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
