Greetings,

Recently, I had the Vundo (not sure what variant) virus on two of my PCs, one desk top, one laptop. I run McAfee full time, and it noticed things were going on, McAfee stopped them, but couldn't really clean it up. The virus was trying to activate every three minutes on the laptop, and I think the same on the desk top. At the moment, we are working on the desk top. Once we get this squared away, I'll work with you folks on the laptop.

I took the time to read, read, and read some more here on Bleeping Computer, and I tried to go after this myself. Now, I may have been successful, but I am definately not sure.... in other words.. I don't feel all warm and fuzzy about it. I think I may have gotten MOST of the virus stuff, but I don't know if I got all of it.

I have decided to ask for assistance from the Bleeping Computer gurus.

I have run Malwarebytes, and it definately caught some stuff and removed it. I just realized that my Windows Firewall was OFF, so now it is ON. I have been using the McAfee firewall I imagine. I had Windows Auto Update on as well. I have tried to update windows a few times this week, and it says I don't need any updates.. Can't remember the last time I didn't need an update.. hmmm.

I have the attach file as well, but you guys want it zipped. I looked at it, and it is smaller in size (6.7K) than the DDS file (12K). I just attached it as is, I don't even know if I have a program to zip files.

I'd like to thank all of you volunteers that help everyone. Frankly, when the PCs in the house start acting up, I get sick to the stomach over all of it. What ever happened to the good ole days of one PC, and I was its master?? LOL...

Thanks in advance... everything I have read and learned from this site is amazing.

Per the instructions, here is my DDS file:

Tried to remove Vundo by myself. Then I installed IE8. I noticed this process running 014108~1.exe, however today I don't see it.

This is a serious case of "I don't trust my PC"

IE comes up horribly slow, that odd executable, and maybe some I am not aware of.

Below is the DDS file per the instructions and the attached Attach file in zip format.

Thanks in advance

I also have noticed that under processes User Name, very few items show who is the process owner. Usually just blank?

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

I also have noticed that under processes User Name, very few items show who is the process owner. Usually just blank?

Are you logged in on this system with an Admin account?

Could you please update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run a full scan instead of a quick scan, and then post the results.

* Anyone other than the originator of this thread, you would be best advised to not run combofix without guidance from someone trained in its use. It is a very powerful tool that can cause damage to your computer if used wrong.

Run comboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Also make sure you close all your browsers just before the instructions tell you to start the scanner.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thank you for the help.

I am running XP home, and I don't have any accounts set up. I just turn on the PC and there it is. I can set up a user account if that is best.

I have been running Malwarebytes for the last 3 or 4 weeks. On the initial run it did find a few things and removed them as far as I know. I may have that earlier log if you need to see it. I run McAfee weekly, and I have not seen anything odd there. The initial launch of IE8 is very very slow...seems odd to me, but maybe it is all the new features. I had the Window Task Manager window switch to small mode, but I got that back.

Within the last week or so, I installed an HP wireless printer.

Here is the Malwarebytes log from tonight:

The ComboFix run could not have been easier. Well thought out, and I really appreciate the ease of use.

Even if it logs right into your account, you do have a user account. Go into the control panel and then to the user account control panel and there should be a user account there with your name. Tell me what kind of account it is.

The earlier Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log would be appreciated.

As for IE8, how long does it take to startup?

Also do a search n your harddrive for 014108 . I know it is not the entire file name that showed up, but lets see if this shows up anywhere. Let me know

The account is Computer Administrator.

Just now, IE8 fired up quickly.... other days it seems to take over a minute... maybe and update thing?

The search for the odd filename had no hits...

Again, thank you for your time.

Do you see that process run anymore? Also IE8, how long does it take to start? I just installed mine and don't use it and it takes 15 seconds from click to ready to surf.

I have not seen that odd process run anymore... so I have no idea where it came from, or if it morphed to another file name.

Tonight, IE8 fired off in about 15 seconds or so, which suprised me. A good suprise...I think.

Anything else I should try? Since the initial incident, I ran Malwarebytes and have for the most part stayed off this PC. I was waiting for the BC crew to help me out.

The HP printer overhead seems insane, but probably normal.

How about the svchost.exe? There are 11 of them running.

What is WOW32.dll?

I am not experiencing anything in particular. Now that IE8 loaded in an acceptable amount of time.

Do we have confidance that the system is clean?

I may just use the old junk, designed for the internet with little to no money credit card and see if anything weird happens.

You did have some problems but got rid of them before you came here. The HP thing isn't really the printer, its all the other junk that comes with it. The number of svchost.exe running is fairly typical. Its actually fewer than what is running on my system. WOW32 is what allows 16 bit code to run on a 32 bit OS.

As for your system, I am almost certain that you are clean, but to make sure, run your computer for a day or two. Reboot it a few times in there. Then run a scan with your antivirus (after you update it) and with an updated Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Come back here and post both logs. Also keep an eye o n how your system operates. If there are any problems that are not normal, let me know about them as well.

Do you have any other questions, comments or concerns?

My only comment is that I am willing to support this effort.

Should I use a User Account typically, and only use the Admin account when needed? I feel so... dumb question.

I will run for a few days... if anything comes up I will post.

You guys are awesome.

thanks.

Run your computer the way you normally do. I am suppose to tell you to use the limited user account, but I don't, so I am not going to tell you to do it. Just treat your computer as if nothing were wrong.

How do I get the process owner to display in Task Manager? Right now, probably about 3 or 4 show the owner...out of about 40.

Thanks a million

Try this,

* Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
* Locate Terminal Services and double-click it
* Set the Startup type to Automatic, and click Apply
* Click the Start button to launch the service manually.
* Now Task Manager User Name field will show up.
