checkin to see if anyone responded

----------------------

Hello shadnottus,

While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.

Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you?

We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.

Thank you for understanding.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

ok I went away for the weekend and my dad downloaded somethin. he deleted it (so he says) but now my spyware and malware scanners wont open, browser is very slow, and internet is only connecting at 36 Mbps usually connects at 54 Mbps.

UPDATE:
Internet and router are now connecting at 54 MBPS again but both of my browsers (IE and FireFOx) are both still running extremely slow. I also get disconnected from the internet about 4 or 5 times a day.

Hi shadnottus,

Sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

Removal Instructions
  • Empty all p2p (Bitlord, uTorrent, etc...) download folders. They might contain infected files. Please avoid using these p2p applications until the system is clean. Using these applications at this stage might lead to reinfection or infecting other users.

  • You have the program Spybot S&D (Teatimer option) running on your machine. We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do. This will only take a few seconds.
    • First disable TeaTimer:
      • Run Spybot-S&D
      • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
      • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
      • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
      • Restart your computer.
Instruction is also here: How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

Note:If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

    • Then download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "Save Link As").
      • Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.exe and let it run.
Note: The Teatimer should be kept disabled until I give you the clean sign.

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

  • Please run Hijackthis. Click Do a system scan and save a logfile then copy and paste the content of the log to your reply.
Please include in your next reply:
  • The Combofix log.
  • A fresh Hijackthis log.
  • Any comment or feedback about how it went.

Ok first the feedback on how it went. started out rocky because spybot S&D would not open. It would act like it was going to run then nothing would happen so I just uninstalled it so that teatimer would not affect anything. I know that some malware will prevent some programs from starting. ok so then I downloaded combo fix and ran it and then ran HJT here are the logs. hope to hear something back soon and thank you very much for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Well done and thanks for the feedback :thumbup2:
  • You have the latest version of Java (Java 6 Update 13) and it is good. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:
    Uninstall the following:

    Java™ 6 Update 6

  • I see that you have BearShare installed. If it is the free version, it includes spyware. The paid version is spyware free. More information here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/117/BearShare.html

From within add/remove program uninstall the following:

    BearShare
    MediaBar

    Remove also the following folder(s):

    C:\Program Files\BearShare
    C:\Program Files\BearShare Applications

  • I see on your log that Pokerstar is installed on your computer:

This program is known to be related to adware/spyware. More information here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/...rStars.net.html
    Uninstall the following:

    PokerStars

Also remove the folder in bold: C:\Program Files\PokerStars.net

  • Close any open browsers.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

    Registry::
    [HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "h:\\Program Files\\BearShare Applications\\BearShare\\BearShare.exe"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{CF40ACC5-E1BB-4AFF-AC72-04C2F616BCA7}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CF40ACC5-E1BB-4AFF-AC72-04C2F616BCA7}]
    Driver::
    npggsvc
    DDS::
    mWinlogon: SfcDisable=-99 (0xffffff9d)

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

    Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you ( "C:\ComboFix.txt"). Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

  • Tell me also how is your computer running.

ok removed the Java 6 update 6 thorugh the ad/remove programs window. closed it out and read the next step.
opened the add/remove programs window and nothing would populate inside of it so I restarted my computer. Opened the window it populated so I remved the bearshare components that you requested.
also removed pokerstars and then did coppied the notepad item that you posted, saved it, draged and dropped onto combofix, combo fix ran. coppied the log file which is in this post and my comp is running somewhat better.
should I try to reinstall spybot S&D now. it seems that the malicios spyware/malware was causing it to not run so if I am correct if the spyware/malware is gone now then spybot S&D should run right?

Thanks for the detailed feedback.

We are almost there. You may wait a little and install Spybot S&D after we finished.

Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, first update it, run a "quick scan", let reboot if needed and copy/paste the log to your reply.

Note: The logs are saved by default under the Logs tab. If the log did not automatically open you can obtain the latest log from there.

My bad. Please let it remove it.
  • You are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can. I recommend this good free antivirus:

    Avira
    • Download the installer. Install and update it.
    • In the left pane click Status. In the right pane click Scan system now.
    • After the scan finished let it remove what it finds and then Click Report.
    • You can get the last report also by clicking on Reports on the left pane.
    • In the right window under Action double-click on the last Scan listed (you see also the corresponding Dat/Time).

The Avira installation file is avira_antivir_personal_en.exe and is as big as 28,6 MB. I prefer downloading from softpedia.com because it has a secure download mirror. If it is an .exe it should be opened like any setup program. If you couldn't install it please do the following:

Please put the downloaded file on your desktop.
Go to start > Run copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK after each line.

cmd /c dir /o:d /a "%userprofile%\desktop" > "%userprofile%\desktop\dirlook.txt"

A text file (dirlook.txt) will be created on your desktop. Please post its content to your reply.

all I had to read was the first line I right clicked on avira_antivir_personal_en and went to properties there was no ".exe? on the end of the file name so I renamed the file and added the .exe and it worked just fine.

Did you say that you would post some rcomended preventative measures as well?

also here is my avira log

Everything looks good. :thumbup2:

Go to start > run and copy and paste or type next command in the field then hit enter:

ComboFix /u

Note: There's a space between Combofix and /

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

The first reboot might be a little slow, the next one will be faster.

Optional Recommendations:
  • Your log looks clean. But your computer is still very much susceptible in particular to hacking and intrusion from outside. If you are not behind a router I strongly advise you to install a firewall before surfing. The windows firewall is not good enough. The Windows firewall provides protection from outside threats as long as the malware is not on your system. When the malware gets to your computer Windows firewall is no more effective. You find more information on firewalls below.
Click for more information on:Understanding and Using Firewalls

There are several good free programs available like:

    Sunbelt-Kerio
(Note: You install the Sunbelt trial version but after the trial period it will revert back to free version.)

    Online Armor Free edition

  • I recommend using Site Advisor for safe surfing. It is a free extension both for Internet Explorer and Firefox. When you search a site it gives you an indication of how safe a site is.

  • I recommend installing this small application for safe surfing: Javacools© SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. Update it manually (if you use the free version) once in 2-3 weeks and enable the restriction.
Please let me know Combofix uninstalled properly.

Happy surfing!
