Hey, I installed an unknown codec for windows media player 11 and since then I've had a virus.
iv managed to run malwarebytes through renaming the file, however I still cant get spybot to run.
Malwarebytes found C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\oembios.exe,
in my registry saying that C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe had been hijacked however i'm really not sure what to do from here :/

I was just wondering, if i simply delete the ,C:\WINDOWS\system32\oembios.exe, section from the registry string will it stop the virus from residing in my pc?

When I'm on the internet and click links it redirects to different sites.
Any help is gladly appreciated.

Daniel

As no logs have been posted, I am shifting this topic from the specialized HiJack This forum to the Am I Infected forum.

PLEASE DO NOT NOW POST LOGS unless a log is specifically requested.

Please tell us what your operating system is: Windows XP, Vista, etc.

I think you were headed in the right direction. Orange Blossom moved your topic because you didnt have a log attached. I recommend continuing in the HJT forum - just with the needed logs.

Please follow this guide from step (6). Post a HJT log to the HJT forum and a Team member will be along to help you as soon as possible. You may wish to post a link back to this topic to see what was discussed thus far.

If you need any help with the guide, please let me know.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum, I was unsure which was correct.

I am running Windows xp home edition
Although the problem has subsided with the redirecting to other sites, my internet is being slower loading pages and also the section in the registry file is still there however I have deleted the oembios.exe using malwarebytes.

Do you know if i can just delete the bad section or whether that would corrupt the windows Logon screen?
Many thanks
Daniel

Hello zomg.its.danny,

I see you were successful in creating the logs and posting them here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/219416/google-redirectingcant-run-spybotslow-internetsystem-restore/ Now that you have the log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
