I have been using McAfee but recently it wouldn't update the virus file. The tech had me remove the application, and now I can't access any McAfee sites, but everythink else seems to be working OK.

I've been through all the suggested Mcafee fixes for this around the apparent conficker infection (stinger, microsoft patch etc), but something still seems wrong. I've installed the Norton 30 day trial to have something running, but I'm posting my Hijack log in hopes one of you might help.

Also a Norton scan has turned up nothing.

Thanks.

Hello sammyjenkis,

Posted Image

McAfee never uninstalls cleanly. :thumbup2:

Download and run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe).
Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe) removes all 2005, 2006, and 2007 and newer versions of McAfee consumer products.
  • McAfee Security Center
  • McAfee VirusScan
  • McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
  • McAfee Privacy Service
  • McAfee SpamKiller
  • McAfee Wireless Network Security
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor
  • McAfee Data Backup
  • McAfee Network Manager
  • McAfee Easy Network
  • McAfee AntiSpyware
Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe.
  • Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed.
Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
  • Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
  • Press Y on the keyboard.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.
All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.
These McAfee removal instructions can be found at http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=408302

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

I tried to run the MCPR tool and it never seemed to work; it just say there and said "processing."
It ended with "Cleanup Failed."

I ran the Malwarebytes tool and am posting it's log.

Please note this is my Mom's computer so I don't have instant access to the machine.

The internet connections are working (yahoo, cnn, other major sites OK), but still no access to the Mcafee site and (interestingly), it won't let me access the bleepingcomputer site!

Also, I disabled system restore.

Any other suggestions? (sorry I forgot to run a fresh HijackThis log)

Hello,

Thank you for letting me know so I won't close the thread. :)

Did you let MBAM clean those? It says no action taken.

Download the HostsXpert Here
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert to your desktop

Open up the HostsXpert program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper left corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click "Restore MS Hosts File"
* close program

Also, I disabled system restore.

Gah! :thumbup2: Re enable it right away, please. If for some reason it was needed you would then have nothing to restore to....better a dirty restore point than none at all!

Let me know if you can access the site now. :step4:

Thanks,
tea

Thanks I will try it.

MBAM just didn't run; the progress bar never moved.

So apparently no malware, Norton hasn't found anything.
What is "HostXpert"?
I'm still confused what might be preventing access to these sites.

Hello,

HostsXpert will reset the Hosts file to Microsoft default and possibly clear up your inability to get to this site. Malware does this a lot.

MBAM did run, or it would not have produced a log for you.....or did you mean you tried to run it again?

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! :thumbup2:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

If ComboFix will not run the first time, then rename ComboFix.exe to sammyj.exe and try it again. :)

Thanks,
tea

I tried to run HostXpert but got the following error message:
"Cannot create file C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\Ext\hosts."

I'm posting both the ComboFix and Hijackthis log files as you requested. System Restore is also back on.

*Please note* In order to run ComboFix, I had to boot the maching in safe mode.
HostXpert also *did not* run in safe mode.

Hello,

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop McSysmon
sc delete McSysmon
sc stop McShield
sc delete McShield
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will flash open and close. This is normal.

Now try to delete the McAfee folder and let me know how it comes out. Also, please post all the HijackThis logs in normal mode. :thumbup2:

Thanks,
tea

OK I ran the FixServices.bat. There was no McAfee Folder to delete.
I noted a McAfee service in the log called "McAfee Real-time Scanner," but it is disabled.

The computer seems to be working and I believe she is going to get the full license for Norton.

Is there anything else that should be addressed?

Thank you so much!

Hello,

You're welcome. :thumbup2:

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: Updates From HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\9972322\Program\Updates from HP.exe
O23 - Service: McAfee Real-time Scanner (McShield) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcshield.exe (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Take care!
