Thanks in advance for your help!

My wife's machine (~4 year old pentium D w/XP sp2) was acting wacky - slow, not responsive, and NORTON 360 had generated a "light blue screen w/a dark blue header saying something like 'NORTON is attempting to remove threats" (apologies for the limited description on that, its second hand from my wife.) Then we attempted a hard reboot and it took forever and never fully booted - got through to the welcome screen but seemed to be in an infinite loop from there. Although, I should note, the screensaver did eventually come on....

Was able to boot in SAFEMODE with networking, then ran SIGVERIF and saw FIPS32CUP.SYS in the system32/drivers subdir with a creation date of 4/6. I googled a bit and found some scary stuff related to FIPS32CUP, so I did a system restore to the day before the FIPS32CUP.SYS creation date and it seemed to fix the symptoms. BUT - out of an abundance of caution I want to make sure nothing bad is left, so that's how I found you!

dss.txt log below and attach.txt is attached. Thanks again for your help, you guys are great!

Hi,

Your system is severly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.
Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.
So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts.

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi,

We are not finished yet though...

1. Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Select "2. Fix Goored" by typing 2 and pressing Enter.
  • Make sure all instances of Firefox are closed at this point.
  • Type y at the prompt and press Enter again.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: If you receive a message saying that GooredFix needs your system to be restarted, please close all applications and reboot your system. Please also allow any registry changes that may be prompted by any of your security programs.

Then, Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then, navigate to and delete the following files:

c:\windows\Lnoxo.bin
c:\windows\Qyocisu.dat

Then, Go to next site:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\93c25503.sys

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

about whether I should be concerned for other machines on my network?

It may be a good idea to post a HijackThislog from them.

* Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Nothing suspicious in above log.

Any thoughts on what is was/is and how I might have gotten it?

In most cases it's getting installed via P2P software like limewire, bittorrent etc...
In other cases via illegal websites (cracksites etc), or a malicious link you received via mail.

You were dealing with several different malware, so I strongly recommend you change all your passwords since they may be known.

thanks. is the machine we originally worked on clean/ok now?

when you talk about passwords, are you referring to system/machine passwords only, or are you talking about any on line passwords that were entered on the infected machine?

Yes, I told you what leftovers to delete :thumbup2:

For the passwords, I mean every password. IM passwords, mail passwords etc..

Also,

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
