Hi,

My computer has been doing some strange things lately so I think I may have some viruses. I'm running McAfee as my firewall and on a recent scan it said my computer has 17 viruses but it couldn't remove them, so it quarantined them. My computer has become very slow and there are some programs running in the background that I don't know what they are. I know because the computer asks me to end task when I shut it down. The programs are iexplore.exe and AutoComplete.exe.

There was one program in particular that McAfee wanted to remove but couldn't. I think it was called Gpup or something like that.

The only thing I've done recently is run Spybot (with no bad results) and try to remove a coupon printer program through the add/remove programs thing under My Computer.

I would appreciate any help you can give me so much!

Here is my DDS log...

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi and thanks so much for helping me! Since I posted the first time, I've run McAfee a couple of times and it's found some viruses. I kept getting a pop up about a "GenericPup" program. Apparently, McAfee couldn't fix it so I just accepted it which was probably a mistake. I got a pop up at the beginning of start up yesterday. Something about an error for rundll. I should have written it down but I didn't.

I also have been having problems accessing certain websites. Like I can't check my bank account. It worked fine on my husband's laptop but my computer told me that Extraco's website was doing maintenance. It's done this with several bill-paying sites.

Anyways, I'm sorry I'm really lousy with describing the errors. And thank you again so much!

Here is my DDS log.

Hi meltin,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Please limit your internet activities and don't do any financial transaction until the computer is clean. Among other things there seems to be a key logger on your computer.
  • I see on the log the Coupon Printer for Windows is installed on your computer:
This program is known to be bundled with adware/spyware.

For more information please see this:
    A Closer Look at Coupons.com

To uninstall Coupon Printer for Windows:

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

    Coupon Printer for Windows

Also delete the folders in bold (if present):

    C:\Program Files\Coupon
    C:\Program Files\Coupons

  • I see Zito Tools is installed on your computer. This program is reported as a Brouwser Hijacker. Plese go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following:

    Zito Tools

Also delete the folders in bold (if present):

    c:\program files\zito

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from MajorGeeks
    • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.
    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  • Please run Hijackthis. Click Do a system scan and save a logfile then copy and paste the content of the log to your reply.

Wow, that Malwarebytes program found over a hundred viruses! Why is it that McAfee and Stopzilla didn't catch this? Are they just really out of date or something? I feel like I can't keep up with the spyware/virus protection.

I paid a bunch of bills before I got your response. I've been going crazy changing passwords on my husband's laptop. Do you think that will be effective?

Here's my Malwarebytes log...

I'm afraid I've got bad news. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

A backdoor Trojan can allow an attacker to gain control of the system, log keystrokes, steal passwords, access personal data, send malevolent outgoing traffic, and close the security warning messages displayed by some anti-virus and security programs.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. This is what you have been doing but to emphasize because you do banking or other financial transactions on the PC please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the Operating System. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still try to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Please let me know if you decide to reformat and reinstall Windows or you want the clean the computer and go on using it.

We have already found a charge on our bank account that wasn't supposed to be there. Turns out someone ordered a five year subscription to a magazine with our credit card. The person who did it was my father in laws crazy ex-girlfriend. We called the bank and they took that charge off and sent us new credit cards. So, we thought it had been taken care of. We are actually going to be closing that bank account tomorrow. Hopefully, nothing more will happen.

But, yeah I have no problem reformatting my computer. I would feel safer doing whatever it takes and whatever you say is best.

Good to see everything is taken care of. And yes, a reformat is the safest option.

Please let me know if you have any question before closing the topic.

One question. I don't have a disc. Is there a way to do this for free on the internet? If not, I can just get it fixed somewhere because I have insurance. What do you think would be wisest? I'm not very computer savvy but I do know how to format the hard drive.

There is no way you can reformat and reinstall without a Windows CD, you can't find free Windows CD on internet.

So I guess the second question is irrelevant as you don't have a Windows Installation CD but in case you could mange it you may see this:

Windows XP Clean Install
