Thanks Louis. I did already try uninstalling then reinstalling the software. i tried that several times and even w/ the tech support guys on the line. I tried the link you gave below and downloaded the appropriate drivers. when i tried to install them it said my system already had newer versions of the same drivers installed. a guy at work said he had similar problems w/ hp products (printers specifically) working w/ XP and opted to buy a different brand. have you heard of HP/XP compatability issues for scan functions? like i said, the rest of the printer (print, copy, photo, fax) capabilities work just fine. the scan option doesn't even show up in the HP solution center.
