Lean back, take a deep breath, release it slowly while counting to ten.
Now we need some more info...calmly.
7.10 was installed and working?
You bought a new wifi device - PCI or USB? (brand/model number helps)
You installed the device under 7.10 or installed the device and installed 8.10?
Can you boot from the CD with "Safe Mode"?
The system boots to a GUI, allowing you to log in? (from the hard drive)
After log in is there anything on the black screen, any text at all?

Ok.
Breathing slowly.
wifi card is a PCI it is a realtek RTL8185 54M
Tried it with 7.10 but don't have wifi.
want to jump on the apartment complex wagon.
Free.
Read on the guide that 8.10 would help.
So I tried it.
Black screen don't have no text.
did not try the safe mode.
but I did try the check disk for errors and all came out good.
I don't know what GUI is but it does let me log in. (log into nothing)
What else can I tell you to get ubuntu running?
My dogs name is sofia.
Help?!
j/k

GUI = Graphical User Interface
Posted Image
In the bottom left corner there's an "Options" button which should offer a "Failsafe" selection.
