How to use the Backup Registry file?

I backed up my Registry on Vista, if i was to make a change to the registry, how would i use my backup file? If something was to go wrong?

How often do people usually backup there registry every week/month/or when they install programs?

Usually when you're going to edit the registry, or removing stubborn programs where you might have to use a third party program
