Hi all, I'm new here and seeking help.

Yesterday I was downloading a game and it turns out the file was a faulty one as the game didn't work and when I clicked on the setup file, nothing happened. So I deleted the file I had downloaded and that's when I noticed some problems starting to appear.

When I opened IE (I'm using version 8) I started to get popups and I haven't had a problem with them before. I get the odd one here and there but now they are becoming a lot more frequent, ever since I downloaded the game.

Also, when I type something into the browsers search bar or anywhere that can be typed on, on any internet page, some of the letters don't show up. For them to all show up, I have to type really slow. For example, this is what the sentence: "I am having trouble with my computer" looks like when I type it on IE:

"Iam havin oble w my computer"

The typing works fine in Firefox and other programmes such as Word, Notepad etc. So this is why I'm certain it has something to do with the file I downloaded and not the keypad on my laptop.

I'm also encountering the error message "Internet Explorer has stopped working" even when I'm running IE with Sandboxie (which I'm doing now) and I still get the popups, when usually Sandboxie prevents them. It seems to be going slower too.

I have scanned my computer with Norton Antivirus 360 and that hasn't detected anything. My system is Windows Vista.

So can anyone help please? I would be eternally greatful if you could as I'm running out of options  Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome here.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi,

If you didn't do it already: reboot your pc.

Then, do a new full scan with MBAM, and post that logfile in your next reply.

Hi,

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi,

Seems to be better, but we're not finished yet.

I still don't have a Kaspersky-log from you.
