Greetings,

I'm posting this from my laptop as the infected desktop will not connect to BleepingComputer.com.

The trouble started about a week ago on my wife's desktop when she complained of her browser being redirected during searches. I investigated and discovered the problem to affect both IE and Firefox. Using several different spyware & viral removal tools over the past week, I have been able to find and remove a number of different infections. None resolved the several issues with her pc. I have tried Ad-aware, SuperAntiSpy, Spybot SD, Windows Defender.

Identified issues:

1. IE and Firefox continue to be redirected when selecting individual search results. IE now pops a redirect warning box, which only serves to block the page opening or permit the redirect.

2. IE and Firefox cannot be directed to BleepingComputer.com.

3. Windows Security warns that firewall is off and that Avast is out of date. I have been unable to reset and activate firewall after several attempts. Avast does not appear to be out-of-date but will no longer update as it has in the past.

4. I was unable to get DDS to run after several attempts. A command prompt window pops up, flickers and disappears.

Therefore, I am posting a HiJackThis log below.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi,

Please download DaonolFix from the link below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
  • Double-click DaonolFix.exe to run it.
  • Select 1. Find Daonol (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • You will see a lot of files being listed - don't worry, they are just being scanned.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called DaonolFix.txt).
Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

**Save it to your desktop**

We need to disable one or more of your security programs so that they do not interfere with ComboFix.

Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Posted Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console I recommend you go ahead and hit yes.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Notes:
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.
  • ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet when it runs. This connection should be automatically restored when ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Thanks.

Hi jp,

Thank you for your assistance.

After running the scans as directed, a quick test indicates that IE & FireFox do not now redirect as before. Windows firewall has been reset and is now active and Windows Security now recognizes Avast as being current.

The requested logs are posted in the following order:

1) DaonolFix
2) ComboFix
3) HJT

Hi,

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {49E67060-2C0D-415E-94C7-52A49F73B2F1} -

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
Please also post a fresh HijackThis log. Any more problems?

Thanks again jp,

I'm not aware of any additional problems. I think there may be some older Java versions that need to go away, but I didn't want to start something new in the middle of the main fix.

I used the Malwarebytes tool that I had previously installed and used. I did make sure to get a good update before using it today.

The logs you requested:

Hi rsteadham

Log looks good :thumbup2:

Yeah, go ahead and remove any old version of Java you have lying around (Java 6 Update 13 is the latest I believe).

Click Start >> Run, and then type ComboFix /u and hit enter.
You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.

Now that your system appears to be clean, there's just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
    1) Comodo
    2) Agnitum
    3) Sunbelt/Kerio

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.

Stay Clean!

Hi jpshortstuff

Once again, thank you for your help.

I think we're done here. I've uninstalled ComboFix and about 5 older versions of Java. I do have a couple of questions for you though.

I currently use the XP firewall. Am I correct in assuming you are not high on the XP firewall?

I think I read a post here that older versions of Adobe Reader may be susceptible to malware, and should be updated. Do you have an opinion on this?

I've outlined a couple of more ToDos for this pc, but they will be completed during the dark hours.

Thanks again. Keep up the GOOD work!

RS

Hi,

If you are using a Router (which I believe you are), then the XP Firewall will suffice as the Router has a hardware Firewall.

Adobe is one of those pieces of software that will always be more secure with newer version. In my personal opinion the threat with an out of date Adobe isn't as big as say, an outdated Java version, but it still exists. If you have the time, you may as well update Adobe.

Any more questions?

Thanks for the opinions.

I will update the Adobe, and probably will engage one of the suggested firewall programs even though I am behind a router. I had previously been using Norton (for years), but the program updates became increasingly bloated and heavy-footed. It turned into a real hog of resources and time available. I got rid of it all last fall and have been using the XP firewall since.

We're good to go...

Best regards,
