Hi all!
I'm trying to rid my wife's computer of a persistent problem; whenever she clicks on a link in firefox or ie, it redirects her to a different site. I've tried using combofix, and it seems to fix it for a few minutes, but the problem reappears soon after that. Any help would greatly be appreciated - I don't even know what virus I'm trying to remove!
Thanks in advance,

Hi dapko,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.
  • Please post the ComboFix log from the first run. If you have run ComboFix once the log in Here: C:\ComboFix.exe. If you have run ComboFix more than once it is in C:\Qoobox folder. It is saved under the name combofixX.txt where X is a number in the name. Post the log with the highest number.

  • Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 2 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt).

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from MajorGeeks
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please include in your next reply:
  • The Combofix log.
  • The Goored.txt
  • The log of MBAM.
  • Any comment or feedback about how it went.

Hi thanks for your help! Here are my three logs...I'm not sure if they found or fixed anything, though - I'm still getting redirected all the time. Should I have run gooredfix to "fix goored"?
Thanks again!

  • Go to start -> Run -> copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK:

    cmd /c del /a /f "c:\windows\Tasks\eovdwrci.job"

A window flashes, it is normal.

  • Please run GooredFix again this time select option 2 to fix. Then reboot and see if redirection in Firefox still exists.

Looks like this fixed it!
last question: could any of my online passwords have been compromised? My wife has been using this computer like this for a few weeks (she didn't tell me about the odd behavior until recently)
Thanks again,

You are welcome dapko.

The reason I asked the log of the first run of ComboFix was to see what was deleted by ComboFix and it was not much. There was the remains of a rootkit in the registry. The infection itself comes often as the part of a Backdoor (at least one Antivirus categorizes Seneka as such). It is better to be safe than sorry and the safest thing to do is to change all the passwords.
  • Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 13.
    • Click the Download button to the right.
    • Select your Platform: "Windows".
    • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
    • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
    • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start => Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java. To do that:
      • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
      • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
      • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
      • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Note 1. If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
Note 2. The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.[/color][/i]

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

  • Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

I suggest you remove the program if you are not using it.
If you decided to uninstall it click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Also remove the folder in bold: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

  • Go to start > run and copy and paste or type next command in the field then hit enter:

    ComboFix /u

Note: There's a space between Combofix and /

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

The first reboot might be a little slow, the next one will be faster.

Optional Recommendations.
  • Your log looks clean. But your computer is still very much susceptible in particular to hacking and intrusion from outside. If you are not behind a router I strongly advise you to install a firewall before surfing. The windows firewall is not good enough. The Windows firewall provides protection from outside threats as long as the malware is not on your system. When the malware gets to your computer Windows firewall is no more effective. You find more information on firewalls below.
Click for more information on:Understanding and Using Firewalls

There are several good free programs available like:

(Note: You install the Sunbelt trial version but after the trial period it will revert back to free version.)

    Online Armor Free edition

  • I recommend using Site Advisor for safe surfing. It is a free extension both for Internet Explorer and Firefox. When you search a site it gives you an indication of how safe a site is.

  • I recommend installing this small application for safe surfing: Javacoolsİ SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. Update it manually (if you use the free version) once in 2-3 weeks and enable the restriction.
Please let me know ComboFix uninstalled properly.

Happy surfing!
