I won't bore you with all the gory details, but my computer is verrrry ill. I can't install my latest purchase of Norton Internet security due to whatever it is that is ailing my system. I was on the phone last night for literally 3 hours with a Norton dude (in India no less....talk about outsourcing jobs!) who had me manually delete what he assumed was all components of my previous version since the computer wouldn't let me use the install/delete function in the control panel. He couldn't figure it out and finally blew me off. Further, I can't get on any antivirus websites with the computer and to be honest, I am totally paranoid about that computer being online for more than a few minutes at a time because you can tell information is flying in and out of the computer even without me doing anything at all. So, I have been trying this and that by downloading what will fit onto a floppy from hubby's laptop and transferring them over to the sick system. So far, nothing has worked. I still cannot install Norton, I am getting hijacked to an Apache server site when I try many of the popular antivirus sites, I cannot access regedit or msconfig (Norton dude had me try it last night...I have no idea what he was going to have me do though), but my SpySweeper did catch Wildtangent and delete it but nothing was fixed afterwards. Further, the computer is still looking for a wildtangent associated .dll file that no longer exists on startup.

So, I read around this site that I am grateful for stumbling upon. I hope I have followed your protocol so that someone will take pity on me and help me. Here is my log. Thanks in advance.

Trish

I haven't done much of anything on the computer that is sick while awaiting a reply from someone here that knows more than me. I really hope someone can help me. Further, the errors I am getting while trying (unsuccessfully) to install my new Norton seem to be pretty common according to their website so I seem to not be the only one with this problem. Why doesn't that make me feel better?

Thanks in advance for any help. I don't have a problem donating money through paypal if I can get these problems fixed.

Trish

Thanks for being patient... Saturday night is family time, so I wasn't around. But let's get started.

You will need to reset your start page when done.

Put a checkmark next to the following entries in HijackThis. Make sure all
other windows and browsers are closed before clicking on “Fix Checked”

Thanks for all your help thus far. A couple of questions though... after performing the .bat should the computer have tried to restart by itself? I had to do it from the start menu. Hope that was ok.

fujyvsz.exe wfcx.exe and vqjqh.exe were no longer there when I got to that point to delete those files; but the beta.exe was and I deleted that.

Now my biggest question right now is should I try to do something about what is left of the Wild Tangent thing? I see it showing up in the log and I get a RUNDLL error about it every time I boot up. "Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll The specified module could not be found." My spysweeper caught it a couple of days ago when my trouble began but obviously didn't catch all traces of it or programs telling it to run. ???

So here is my new log. You are a wonderful person for helping people like us. My husband wanted to call some local "geeks on call" business. I told him I wanted to wait on you guys so I can have an opportunity to learn about what happened, rather than depend on someone else to do it for me. Thanks again in advance.

Trish

Fix this line with HJT, and you will no longer get the wild tangent error:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain

I can't think that the .bat file has ever caused a system to reboot, but I suppose it could. All it does is cleans out temp folders, so I'm not sure why it would.

Remove that line with HJT, reboot, and run your Adaware and Spybot again, then let me know if you are having any more problems.

So, at this point in the game, should I try to install my Norton Internet Securities 2005 again? It would never let me get anywhere because the viruses or whatever maintained enough traces to prevent a new program to be installed, but didn't allow for protection. That computer is not protected at all right now and I am afraid to hook it up to the internet long enough to do much of anything, not to mention that the computer was consistently rerouted from symantec's website to an apache server. I thought I corrected for that, but what I found and deleted didn't work...but at least it didn't harm anything.

Again, thanks for all your time and effort.

Ok, so I decided to try installing Norton. It worked. I am now in the process of my reboot so I can finish putting back together my computer. Again, I would like to thank you for all your help. If you get a chance, could you please explain to me exactly what it was you had me do to fix the computer and why? I am curious what my computer was infected with. A paypal donation will be coming your way shortly.

Thanks again, you are a life saver.

Trish

All I had you do were remove all of the conflicting start pages/ search pages, and some unidentifiable processes. I also disabled Real Player and Quicktime from running at startup, because all that does is consume system resources.

I had you run the .bat file to clean out places where malware sometimes reinstalls itself from.

I have no idea what it was you were infected with.. some type of Adware. I just know what doesn't belong in your HJT log. At any rate, you did a good job. And please, keep your donation. If you feel strongly about it, then do something nice for a total stranger sometime.

You did good. Give yourself a pat on the back.

Believe it or not, I am one of those few people that find pleasure in doing nice things for strangers. There was a lady in front of me buying stuff for a birthday party for a little girl. She obviously had just gotten off from work and was asking the cashier to subtotal her stuff every so often. Having been a cashier myself as a teenager, I knew that lady was working off a tight budget. She had enough money for everything but a cute little Dora doll...her total just barely under 60 dollars. I paid for my purchases and that Dora doll and chased her out the door with it. She hardly spoke English...sounded like a Russian accent...she was so grateful...many Americans would never have reacted the way she did when I gave her that doll. I told her I paid for it and to tell her little girl happy birthday for me. One last glimpse of her as I was pulling out of the parking lot, she had tears streaming down her face. It made me feel good. Besides, having a little boy, I don't get to buy dolls. I will never forget that lady.

Thanks again for all your help. Now, if I can't get this bleep set up right later, I might be back. I really don't want to sit on the phone for another 3 hours with the Symantec people over in India (note to self, find another antivirus/firewall protection that keeps jobs at home next year when subscription runs out) and still end up not getting anything done.

Have a good day...hope your father's day is going well.

Trish
