I was requested to post this hijack log from over here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/214638/malicious-software-removal-tool-malware-trojan/

Here is a summary of my problem (same as in the other thread):
"...I would like help in removing some infections that my computer has got since a few days ago. Somehow (while I was browsing thru the internet for some live streaming video I guess) some trojan got in (this was later found by my Symantec Endpoint protection) and since then, a new malware program got installed (unremovable by the less sophisticated me). It is called "Malicious Software Removal Tool"...it runs at startup everytime (red shield with a cross in my task bar) and runs a scan automatically. Then says my computer is infected, lists 3 infections, said it fixed one and I have to buy a MS product to fix the rest. Though the screens look exactly like the microsoft product with the same name (I checked the internet) I am quite confident that this is not authentic. Soon after, if I dont do anything with the program, it starts giving me messages such as "Critical System Warning! Your system is probably infected with a version of Spyware.IEPass.thief." or some other similar msgs with a red balloon with an 'X' in the task bar. Temporarily what I have been doing for a few days is just going to task manager and terminating the 'malwareremoval.exe' program. This helps get rid of the program but my computer has slowed down significantly.

I did a Symantec scan, and found no infection (it automatically detected some trojan horses and quarantined them during the time I got infected - DWHE420.tmp, 49c2da87.tmp & DWH8AF4.tmp), then did a Spybot (Search & destroy), then 'Malwarebytes - Anti-Malware' scans and they all did not find anything major. Then I installed AVG internet security, it found some infections "Virus found JS/Pakes" and "Virus found Exploit" in the last couple of days..."

"...Hi garmanma, I initially thought the malicious software removal tool is real too, but looks like it isn't. I've had this laptop with the same OS for newrly 3 years now and this is the 1st time I am seeing it.

This program has just installed itself, it is appearing in the start -> programs list with no option to remove/uninstall etc (not even thru 'Add/Remove' programs). It runs everytime I restart my laptop. If I don't terminate immediately, it automatically starts a scan and throws in three errors, says it fixed one and to fix the rest I have to go buy a product. Then I start getting popups warning me that I have some form of Trojan or the other and I should do something. The red circled X in the system tray bar keeps appearing and throws warning.

Everytime I allow it to run (i.e. not terminate it), Symantec Endpoint catches Trojans. This makes me doubt if this is a genuine Microsoft product. Please help me remove this from the startup/registry..."

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

Please run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and update it, then run a full scan.

After that Download and scan with CCleaner
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

And lastly, * Anyone other than the originator of this thread, you would be best advised to not run combofix without guidance from someone trained in its use. It is a very powerful tool that can cause damage to your computer if used wrong.

Run comboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Also make sure you close all your browsers just before the instructions tell you to start the scanner.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

The only logs I need are from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and combofix.

Hi Hoov,

Thank you very much for your assistance. Sorry for the delayed response.

To sum up my problem again: Few weeks ago this 'Malicious Software Removal Tool' (a fake one and not the real Microsoft tool) installed in my computer by itself and has added itself in the startup list. If I allow it to run while my laptop is in use, it runs some scans, and eventually throws malicious warnings, introduces trojans (caught by symantec endpoint protection sometime later) etc. What I have been doing is basically as soon as the laptop restarts, I go to the task manager and kill the 'malwareremoval.exe' program. Then there doesn't seem to be an issue. But I would like this removed from the system altogether. Also, I don't know if this has installed something in my system or has created some other problem that I currently don't see.

Here are the MBAM and Combofix log. If you have any questions please let me know. I'll be online all night.

Again, thank you very much for your help.

Hi Hoov - That was quick!!

Yes, I restarted my computer. That 'Malicious Software Removal Tool' still gets initiated. It is still in the startup programs list. As usual, I killed the process right away.

Thanks.

reboot to safe mode and run both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and combofix again. Full scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, just as you did before. Then reboot and post the logs. Check to see if it came back as before. If it does come back,

Please download RunScanner
  • Save it to a folder you create such as C:\Runscanner (this assumes Windows is installed on your C: drive).
  • Launch Runscanner by double-clicking runscanner.exe within the C:\Runscanner folder.
  • Vista users must also click Continue to open Runscanner when prompted by User Account Control (UAC)
  • Check Beginner Mode
  • Click Scan computer
  • Your will see a "Runscanner scan in progress" window displayed while Runscanner scans your system
  • At the conclusion of the scan, save the run file called runscanner.run to your documents folder or directly to the Runscanner folder. This is the file you will need to upload.
  • A runscanner.log file will automatically open in Notepad. Just close the Notepad window because, it is ONLY the runscanner.run file that we are interested in.
  • Next, zip up the runscanner.run file that you just saved.
  • I want you to upload the zipped runscanner.run file as an attachment in your next reply
  • To do that choose "Additional Options" under "Post Reply"
  • Browse to the zipped RUN file location and then click the "Post" button to attach the file.
  • I will review the run file, and then upload it back to you with items marked for deletion.
  • Please await my directions and the returned RUN file, and do not delete anything in the interim

Here are the three items. The malwareremoval/'malicious software removal tool' still remained after running MBAM and Combofix in safe mode. Below are the logs. Also attached is the runscanner.zip file.

Now, I want you to fix some autostart items by using the RUN file that I have attached with items marked for deletion:
  • Please download and extract the attached Zip file called runscanner<user name>.zip to your Runscanner folder
  • Open Runscanner in Expert Mode by double-clicking runscanner.exe, checking "Expert" and clicking OK.
  • Click the "Open Run File" button
  • Browse to "runscanner<user name>.run" (the run file you just unzipped) located in the Runscaner folder, and click Open
  • The screen will refresh after the run file loads
  • Click the "Item Fixer" button
  • The items selected to be fixed will be displayed and checked for removal
  • Click "Fix Selected items"
  • Confirm that you want to fix these items by clicking OK in the confirmation dialog box.
  • You will receive a "Done fixing items" message when removal is complete.
  • Launch Runscanner again, save another .RUN File called runscanner<user name2>.run
  • Zip up runscanner<user name2>.run and attach it to your next reply please.
Now go to C:\Program Files\MalwareRemoval and delete the entire MalwareRemoval folder.

After that, update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run a full scan, remove everything it finds. After the scan is done, reboot the computer.

[*]Launch Runscanner again, save another .RUN File called runscanner<user name2>.run
[*]Zip up runscanner<user name2>.run and attach it to your next reply please.[/list]
So after this, post up the new runscanner log, and a new Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan log.

Hi Hoov

I uploaded the runscanner, ran the process and fixed the issues. Then as per the instructions, I ran it again. Attached is the *.run file. Then I delete the entire MalwareRemoval folder in C:\Program files. Finally I updated MBAM and ran a full scan. Here is the log.

Upon reboot, that program is not showing up anymore. Thank you so much!

I am curious, what sort of malware was that? How do I avoid such things?

It is just a bogus malware removal tool. Chances are you (or someone using your computer) got a popup and it said something about infections present on your computer and the popup was clicked, and that was the approval to install the software. One of the local folks I help just had the same thing happen. And she had no clue as to how she got it either.

The way to keep from getting it in the future, is if you get a popup warning about infection, close the webpage that you just went to and got the popup on, or close the browser entirely.

Now there are something's you need to do to fully clean your system and keep it secure.

[*]Please download OTCleanIt from one of the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:[*]Double click the Posted Image icon.
[*] Click the large "Cleanup" button.

Cleaning out Temporary Files etc. There are several different products that you can use for this. You can go thru the Internet Options in the windows Control Panel. There are several programs that also do the job better than windows does it, in my opinion. There is System Security Suite, EasyCleaner, Ccleaner. Also sometimes other program sometimes do it as well as what you originally got it for like ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Just make sure to keep them updated and use them regularly.

Disable and Enable System Restore.
If you are using Windows Vista or XP, then I recommend you turn off System restore, and then turn it back on so that you will not be able to restore your problems to a clean computer.

Here are some good tutorials for that.
Windows Vista Restore Guide
or
Windows XP System Restore Guide
Reboot
Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Create a System Restore Point
Go to all programs, then to accessories, then to system tools, then to system restore. Check the box for create restore point (not select a restore point), then click next and follow the instructions.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions: (unless you are using ZoneAlarm Security Suite or something similar, then you would secure the browser thru the firewall).

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use a different browser other than IE (most exploits are pointed towards IE). One of them is
Firefox.
It is also worth trying Thunderbird for controlling spam in your e-mail.

Always use an UPDATED anti-virus program Make sure you update this at least weekly, if not more often. This is one thing that may Ave you more than anything else.

Run malware scanners. Three free ones are Spybot Search and Destroy, and AdAware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Always use a firewall.
Any firewall is better than none, and you should pick a firewall that you will use, as even the best firewall is worthless if you turn it off.

Learn how to use your firewall Only programs that need it should have access to the net. But these are specific to the firewall you use, so you will need to learn how. Several firewalls have support forums here. My page will help you with ZoneAlarm if that is what you choose.

Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems. Some people swear that more protection is provided, but the reverse is true. They tend to argue amongst themselves and end up leaving holes. Now I have more than 1 AV installed on my computer, and I keep them up to date. I only run one at a time, but each program has weakness's, so I keep a backup in case my computer starts acting up.

MOST IMPORTANT : Windows and IE, and whatever other software that you have that connects to the net, needs to be kept updated. The reason is, these programs connect to the net, and if there is an internal security problem, you have already told your firewall to allow the communication, and thus you will have allowed a hole. UPDATES are important. I suggest that you make sure that Windows Updates and the updates for your antivirus and antimalware programs are set for automatic updates.

Don't ever use P2P or filesharing software Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

Before using any malware detection / removal software Check with Rogue/Suspect Spyware List and Rogue Applications List That way you will know if the program you are looking at is on the up and up. If you want to know how it stacks up against other programs check out SpywareWarrior

We have a good guide here at Spyware Hammer on how to prevent Malware in the Future. You might want to peruse this and follow the recommendations in there.
