Every time I open the Internet (Mozilla or IE) I get reinfected with some sort of browser hijacker. Currently in my HJT log it shows up as 'O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Iqogasoqegepazop] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\idogojudoyat.dll" ,e'. I can fix it there and also remove it with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (2 infected items show up after a quick scan with different names each time), however as soon as I restart my comp to complete removal and try to get back on the internet I end up with the same problem. The problem as far as I can tell is just terrible lag when I'm on the internet. I'm sure there are a lot of items in my HJT log that are unnecessary or even detrimental to my computer so I'm open to any and all recommendations of what I should fix (I have a general idea on a lot of them but would prefer to hear it from someone with expertise on this topic).

Any help is much appreciated!

To note, I run AVG Free 8.5, and I have the following anti-spyware/malware programs: the above mentioned Malwarebytes, Spybot - Search & Destroy, and SUPERAntiSpyware Free edition.

My HJT log is attached

Hi,

Are you using version 1.36 from Malwarebytes?

Anyway, to be sure... * Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Do not attach your logs, but copy and paste them in the thread instead.

Hi,

Before there were only 2 infected files, now I'm up to 5! The Vundo ones are newer developments.

That's also why I asked to update.

Did you reboot afterwards?
Your HijackThislog looks clean again and normally your mbam scan should come up clean as well, so please Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

I did reboot afterwards and the mbam scan looks clean. I'm still experiencing terrible speeds on the internet, both with IE and mozilla. My roommates computers are all running fine, except when I'm on the network they are experiencing some lag as well. I suppose I could try reinstalling mozilla.

One of the processes in my Task Manager is called "System", no .exe on it. It's image name is just "System" and it's user name is System as well. It takes up more memory than anything else I have running except when I have an internet browser open. It's been like this for a couple of months and I find it strange because on all other computers I've checked for it it's only running at a couple hundred Ks whereas as mine usually hovers right around 60,000K. I haven't been able to find any information on it except that it has something to do with external ports and I don't have a clue about that stuff.

Also, if you could please tell me which of my HJT items I can, or should, click 'fix checked' on that would be much appreciated.

THANKS

Hi,

The "system" process may indeed spike - this is normal.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!

The "system" process isn't spiking - in fact it doesn't fluctuate at all. It's always at 64,000K. What's the reason for this?

We get great internet speeds here, and I have for the entire time I've been here. Ever since this browser hijacker (which appears to be gone from all my scans and logs) I am experiencing terrible speeds and I am very apparently taking up bandwidth from the other computers on my network. When I try to load a new page the CPU usage spikes to 50% or more. How can I diagnose this?

When I try to load a new page the CPU usage spikes to 50% or more.

That is normal. You always get a cpu spike when you load a new page.

Anyway, do next please, so I can also see what you have recently installed - this because, most users don't have an Antivirus installed. Then they get infected and install an Antivirus. Security Software does slow down, this is a fact and because of that, many still believe that their computer is still infected, because it runs slower than before.

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Hi,

Navigate to and delete the following leftovers:

c:\windows\Wmubesodamap.bin
c:\windows\Lvuvecuxisetacok.dat

The rest looks OK.

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Cool, thank you. I figured out the whole image name "system" issue - it was due to the latest version of AVG free I've been running. I read quite a few other people experiencing the same issue. I uninstalled AVG and am going with Avast for the time being.

A question regarding Avast and firewalls: Avast has a firewall running, correct? If so, should I disable my windows firewall to avoid having a conflict between the two firewalls?

Thanks

Hi,

For Avast, it's mainly an Antivirus but has a "lightweight" firewall included. In your case, I would leave the Windows Firewall enabled :thumbup2:

Also...
