First of all, I don't know what I've done wrong, but I found out that since this morning, I can't click on ANY link provided by Google without being redirected by Lifetravel2009.com and thrown onto another page that also has what I searched for, but not the right stuff. I just ended up at the site thetop10.com. I tried metacrawler instead and that didn't give me any troubles, so I guess it's google related. I also installed Zonealarm today and that already blocked two malware programs (I googled them BEFORE this all happened).

Here's the DDS list:

Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.

Looks like your infected with Koobface.

Please do the following:

MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

ReScan

Please rescan with DDS and post DDS.txt

In your next reply, please post:
  • MBAM log
  • DDS log

Hello,

The entries still remain, let's go with a more aggressive tool.

ComboFix

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations (If you already have it, delete it and download again):

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Instruction can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Note** ComboFix was designed only to be used under the supervision of a helper, not for general use.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Now, I want to mention that something odd happened after I used Combofix:

I couldn't use my internet anymore, but my PC did have connection. For some reason the proxyserver didn't like my Firefox anymore. Turned out it was set to manual and blank, while when I turned it back to automatically, it worked again (phew!).

And now this: I did a google search, clicked the first link and voila! Google search works! Now, knowing the internet a bit as well as my PC, does this mean I got rid of the bugs? It's not a retorical question, but I want to know for sure.

Hello,

Your log looks a lot healthier and I'm glad you can now get correct search results but there are a few files remaining. Also you should try and limit your internet activity during the course of this fix as a semi clean computer quickly becomes severely infected after a short time on the internet.

CFScript

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
09-04-07 11:57 . 2009-04-07 11:57 2 ---h----- c:\windows\t55ft2803f44.dat
2009-04-07 11:57 . 2009-04-07 11:57 2 ---h----- c:\windows\t55ft2802f44.dat
2009-04-07 11:57 . 2009-04-07 11:57 1 ---h----- c:\windows\f23567.dat
2009-04-07 11:57 . 2009-04-07 11:57 1 ---h----- c:\windows\b4657.dat
2009-04-07 00:32 . 2009-04-07 00:32 2 ---h----- c:\windows\t55ft2829f44.dat
2009-04-07 00:32 . 2009-04-07 00:32 1 --a------ c:\windows\9g2234wesdf3dfgjf23

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

My Internet Explorer has ceased to work. I even tried resetting all stuff to default, but it doesn't work.

Edit: that problem has been solved thanks to a friend of mine, moving on.

Hello,

The files found are located in your Java Cache. Please clean it by using this guide.

Then let's perform another online scan to make sure we got everything.

Kaspersky Online Scan

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello Jat,

I've cleared the JAVA cache AND changed the memory for it from 1000 Mb to just 5. Don't know why it was set to 1000, but oh well.

Kaspersky scan... I don't know, but it's at 6% now and it has taken 51 minutes for that. A little calculation on that makes it 850 minutes (over 14 hours) I'll have to wait to let Kaspersky do its job, possibly much longer... It already has found one threat, but 14 hours or longer???

Hello,

That is unusual. We will use another scanner:

F-Secure Online Scan

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Hello,

Looks better. Just one file left. Lets do this:

Show Hidden Files

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Navigate to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ben de Jonge\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\52

Once inside, press ctrl + a simultaneously to highlight everything.
Press the delete key on your keyboard.

Now empty your recycle bin.

ReScan

Please rescan with DDS and post DDS.txt

Hello,

Congratulations you are now clean! :thumbup2:

We should tidy up our mess though.

Uninstall ComboFix
  • Go to Start, then click Run
  • In the box, type: Combofix /u
  • Press Enter or click ok, and ComboFix will uninstall. Refer to the picture below if unsure.

Other Deletions

Locate where you saved DDS.exe, right click the file and select Delete.

Take a read of this excellent tutorial:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Disable and Enable System Restore.

You should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. You should now create a new restore point, since your system is clean.

You can find instructions on how to disable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
  • It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
  • This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
System still slow?

You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

Next, I would recommend the download and installation of some (I would say two is enough) of the following programs:

Spybotę - Search and Destroy
  • This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
  • You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
SUPERAntiSpyware
  • You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
  • Each antispyware product has different detection rates for different infections, using different products therefore increases your chances of finding and killing most malware.
MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well known anti-virus and anti-malware applications fail to detect.
  • Ability to perform full scans for all drives.
  • The "Quick Scan" option lets the user scan the computer quickly checking for the most damaging threats and completing in usually under 10 minutes.
Javacoolsę SpywareBlaster
  • SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Glad I could Help :)
