Hi everyone

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

Hi Orange Blossom

Thank you for your reply. I ran the scan... hopefully I disabled everything I was supposed to beforehand. I didn't see any instructions on how to post my log afterwards so I hope it's okay if I just paste it in here as I did with HJT log. Also my laptop is showing that my entire c drive is only 68.2GB with 4GB free... I can't remember if it was more before... I think so... , but isn't this a rather odd size for the entire available space? I had 2 nasty trojans that I seem to be rid of, but my laptop is much slower than ever before. It often freezes for a few moments and seems to be "thinking" a lot. Here's my log:

Hi, lizzy1e :thumbup2:

Welcome.

There is no evident malware in the log. Records indicate you have Malwarebytes Antispyware. Please post its report.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • If you receive a message that Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot, kindly write down on paper the list of files present in the message before continuing, and post it in your next reply.
  • Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

P.S. I noticed a process called "csrss.exe". I had this earlier and read several pages claiming it to be connected to a trojan or keylogger (others say it's a legitimate Microsoft process) so I tried to do something about it.... then suddenly it was gone. Now this evening it's back - is this process an issue? The Description in the task manager is blank for it.

Hi, lizzy1e :thumbup2:

The process is legit.

Lets scan for remnants:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA tecnology to perform the scan. If you do not have the latest JAVA version, follow the instrutions below under Upgrading Java, to download and install the latest vesion.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 13.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Just a note that I will post the requested log tomorrow, just don't have the fastest internet access in the world and Kaspersky's updates for the online scanner became huge. I'll try overnight.

Kaspersky found no malware or viruses. Perhaps this laptop just needs more ram to run Vista and the programs I've recently installed. Thank you for all your help though.

Hi, lizzy1e :thumbup2:

Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click the Vista START button
  • Now type Combofix /u in the Searchbox and press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
Follow these steps to do some maintenance. Perhaps it will help you gain some speed:

MSconfig

Limit the number of programs running in the backgound. Deselect all programs from the list, except for the Antivirus entries

Here is how:

http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_vista.html

Perform Disk Cleanup:
  • Click Start, and then click Computer.
  • Right-click the drive you want to clean, and then click Properties. On the Properties dialog, click Disk Cleanup.
  • Click either My Files Only or Files From All Users On This Computer.
  • On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the files to delete, and then click OK.
Run Chkdsk

(Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks disk volumes for problems and attempts to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. Disk errors are a common source of difficult-to-track problems, and Chkdsk should be one of the first tools you use when troubleshooting problems that do not appear to be the result of a recent system change. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to use Chkdsk.

Before running Chkdsk, be aware of the following:
  • Chkdsk requires exclusive access to a volume while it is running. Chkdsk might display a prompt asking if you want to check the disk the next time you restart your computer.
  • Chkdsk might take a long time to run, depending on the number of files and folders, the size of the volume, disk performance, and available system resources (such as processor and memory).
  • Chkdsk might not accurately report information in read-only mode.
You will needd to reach the command prompt to run CHKDSK
  • Click on the Vista Start Button
  • In the "Start Search" box type CMD or CMD.EXE.
  • Do NOT hit ENTER. Instead hit CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
  • You will be prompted by the UAC warning window. Click on CTRL+C or click on the "Continue" button.
  • Note that the CMD window has an "Administrator:" appended to the window title.
  • At the prompt type the following and press Enter after each command:
chkdsk C: /f /r

That should help you gain more work space, thus speed. Keep me posted

Thank you very much for all your help. It seems a bit better now, I might still purchase more ram though as I use graphic programs that require a lot of resources and that's when things become really slow. :thumbup2:
