I've had a a prolonged problem with a piece of XP software that I don't use called the Hidden Fax Window. It regularly causes other Internet related software to hang such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla and others. Interestingly, if one hangs then a sort of cascade failure occurs resulting in a whole group of software hanging. The PC will still believe that it is connected to the internet - the display on the bottom right hand corner of the screen will show that it is connected - but the connection has been definitely been broken and yet cannot be closed down. When I try to restart the computer it will always freeze on "Saving your settings" and I inevitably end up having to physically reboot the computer by pressing the button on the tower. This can happen several times in a day and then can go for weeks without re-occurring. If anyone out there knows how to deal with this very annoying problem then I would appreciate any contributions. At the moment I remain baffled and confused.

Thank you.

Read this article:

I know....It is referring to dial-up connections...Pay close attention to the reply from "doverbeach"...It makes sense to me...
Does this look like an OldGrumpyBastard or what?

Thanks for that. I've followed it all through and I'll see how things go. I've disabled the fax as I don't actually make use of it.
