Norton 360 detected that I was infected with 2 viruses (W32.tidserv.g & Downloader).

Files/folders were being automatically written to external media (blank dvd) as soon as inserted. Also some google searches (eg search for Symantec/Norton) would re-direct to other websites.

I followed the removal instructions from the website for w32, but when re-started in safe mode, computer froze at a blue screen or stall at dos script - would not boot at all.

Was able to boot with ERD Commander 2003, and delete several lines from the registry norton indicated was related to the virus.

restarted & the computer booted fine; it no longer auto-writes to external discs or drives; but I still get DNS redirected from google links

I also noticed that when I clicked c: or d: I would get the message “Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-9-2-23… .com” I fixed this with a program called autorun eater.

I'm worried there is still some infections (still get DNS redirects from google); I'm very hesitant to log into any accounts because of the infections.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi vynal,

There's indeed bad stuff still remaining there.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi again,

I recommend you to uninstall P2P file sharing programs there. Nowadays, major part of infections are received from P2P networks.

Uninstall following vulnerable Java:
Java™ 6 Update 7

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader!

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Hi Blade

Ok, I've gotten rid of Java™ 6 Update 7 and the old Adobe Reader. Also uninstalled emule. I ran Combofix, ATF Cleaner, then Kapersky found some infections, then ran another DDS. Here are the 3 logs.

It seems to me that Norton 360 isn't worth the box it came in. What is the best virus scanner I should be using?

What is the best virus scanner I should be using?

Hi vynal

There isn't any antivirus product that would detect all possible threats. However, following are good free options:

Hi Blade

Thanks for the antivirus recommendations! As you can imagine, I've been reading some AV software reviews. BitDefender & Kaspersky got some high marks...Do you think the programs you have to buy would be better than the free ones you mentioned? Or is it all just personal preference?

Anyways, i permanently deleted all old/archived e-mails from Outlook (these had already been put in the trash folder and I didn't even realize they were still hanging around).

I tried the Google searches with Firefox, and did not get the DNS redirects when clicking the link for Norton (like i did before). I tried a few other searches, and they seemed to work ok too.

I ran another Kaspersky scan, and a DDS scan like you suggested. Here are the results. I see that Kaspersky sees 4 infections in a quarantine folder - can I get rid of these somehow?

Hi

Those findings will be removed when ComboFix is uninstalled. Instructions for that below.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
You may delete dds.scr file and related logs too.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
The program is available for download here
  • Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location
  • hosts file:
  • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
  • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
  • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
  • However, it can slow down certain computers.
  • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
  • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
  • Click run
  • In the dialog box, type services.msc
  • hit enter, then locate dns client
  • Highlight it, then double-click it.
  • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
  • Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :thumbup2:

EDIT: Forgot answer to your question. Yes, it's just personal preference :)

Blade,

What can I say...but Thanks so much for your time and expertise! I'm glad to hear that I'm all clean :thumbup2: . My system seems to be running fine! I've uninstalled combofix, updated the system restore, downloaded the critical updates (although the ones I tried said they were already installed), and am in the process of setting up Ad-Aware & Spybot. These two programs are active during startup and running in the background - should I keep them this way permanently?

You included some fixes for IE. I checked and all the settings were set as you described. I do however do most of my browsing with Firefox - If there are any security settings for this program that should be updated, please let me know.

I'm going to look into setting up the hosts file as well - hopefully it won't cause me any problems.

You've been great and BleepingComputer is a great forum - I'm glad I found it.

Take Care!

Vynal

You're welcome :thumbup2:

Ad-Aware & Spybot. These two programs are active during startup and running in the background - should I keep them this way permanently?

One real time protection of antispyware program should be enough. No need to have both of these running with real time protection on.
