Last week I was surfing through the internet on Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox when my window immediately closed and my computer was automatically restarted.

When the computer restarted, no error messages came up, nor did my computer inform me that my system underwent a serious crash (which I have seen happen before). I figured something strange had simply happened so I continued on with what I was normally doing Now with Mozilla Firefox open, I was on a few websites and I was talking to someone on Skype. At some point my computer froze on me and I had no control over anything. I manually shut my computer down and rebooted. I have now manually restarted my computer 10 to 15 times over the past two days. I have also had the blue screen of death three times over the past two days. The first two times, the screen indictired no specific problem and gave me the error message of 0x0000008E (0x000000CA ... while the error message last night gave me IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. That instance I was actually in safe mode scanning my computer.

During that time, I have run AVG, McAffee, and AdAware scans but the computer freezes up before they finish. I did run a quick scan using MalAwares and it detected nothing, but when I ran a full scan, 6 objects were detected. Unfortunately, by that time, the computer was frozen and I could not find out what they were. I have also tried ran a SmitFraud program and have the logs from that and attempted to run VundoFix and Hot CPU Tester but that is when the BSoD came in.

My crashes seem to occur at no specific time. I have gone three or four hours with using my computer fine, but other times the freeze occurs within fifteen minutes of each other. I am currently running Internet Explorer, and while my computer freezes less while using this browser, it still freezes. Firefox and Chrome also continued to crash after the first instances.

I have no other error messages, or anything that suggests that something is wrong with my computer. I analyzed my main hard drive and DiskDefragmenter says I do not need to defrag the drive (I tried anyway but the computer crashed). I have also used ATF Cleaner to remove all excess files. My computer never runs sluggish, since it has 2 GB of RAM, plenty of free disk space and an otherwise reliable system. I have never experienced crashes like this before, and I feel like I am harming my computer by manually restarting it so often. While I cannot be sure whether or not this is a virus or spyware, I hope to check the software side of things before bringing it to someone to look at.

I am running Windows XP SP3.

Thank You

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K
