I hope you can help me out, well, my friend.
His Windows 98 SE PC has been taken over by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c virus/infection.
The problem being is that when the PC is booted up, either in normal or safe mode, and windows loads up showing the desktop and the Trojan blue screen msg, a message appears saying explorer has a problem and gives an option of Close or Details.
Nothing can then be done on the PC. Cannot choose control panel or run control panel. Cannot bring up explorer or connect to the net.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Only_me and welcome to BleepingComputer!

There is a step by step post on how to remove the Smitfraud trojan.

You can find that here: Smitfraud fix

Good luck with the fix!

Hi rigelslight,
Thanks for the reply. I have been to that link before and the problem is that action 3 is to get to the control panel to uninstall some applications. Windows won't allow me to do that as explorer keeps crashing. Nothing seems to work. I've tried running control panel from the run prompt but that refuses to work.
Is the only way to run a windows repair from the windows CD first to see if can replace the damaged files.

Thanks

Hi Only Me,

My apologies for the delay in responding.

Try going into safe mode BEFORE you try to add and remove the programs listed in the fix. You can enter safe mode by doing the following:

Restart your computer and tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then press the enter button on your keyboard.

Continue with the rest of the instructions as stated.

Good luck

Rigel
