Hello hornabythanger and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

Download nailfix.zip and unzip it to its own folder.

Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Navigate to the folder you unzipped nailfix.zip into and double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Step #5

Start ewido and click on the Scanner button. On the Scanner page click on My Computer and then click the Start button to begin the scan. Let it run to completion and fix anything that it finds.

Step #6

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.updatesearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.updatesearches.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.updatesearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.updatesearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.updatesearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.updatesearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.updatesearches.com/
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp8E66.tmp
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sjonac] c:\windows\system32\ocyookc.exe r
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #7

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp8E66.tmp
c:\windows\system32\ocyookc.exe

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OT
Thanks for the response, have tried what you said, however had a couple of problems.

When I tried to run nailfix, I got a message saying.

C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
system file not suitable for running in dos & windows applications

so I clicked ignore, it did as said made my icons disappear for a sec and closed down windows explorer.

Also Ewido would not scan in safe mode, so I rebooted in normal mode, ran nailfix with the same message recieved, as above. Ran Ewido and scanned and quarantined what was found.

I then went into safe and performed the changes you recommended in Hijackthis.

Here is the log after the clean.

Is this ok now or can you recommend any further action?

Hi hornabythanger. There are no more infections showing in your log. Good job! The error messages that you are receiving are probably due to the fact that your operating system is extremely out of date and obsolete. Let's get that updated next.

Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping your OS updated you leave yourself open to many of the infections that cannot be installed on a properly updated system. I strongly recommend that you go to the Windows Update site and install Service Pack 2. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. This will patch your system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which your present system has open.

Post back a new HijackThis log after completing the above and hen we can finish things up.

Cheers.

Hi hornabythanger. The log is clean so we're ok there. The problem might be that you hnever ran the nailfix.cmd file. Let's try that again.

Download xp_fix.exe and run it. Reboot your computer when finished.

Now navigate to the folder you unzipped nailfix.zip into and double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Post the results back here.

Cheers.

ok, downloaded and ran xp fix which said fixed missing stuff. Then rebooted and ran nailfix, which gave a list of the same statement, however I did'nt write it down. nailfix then gave me an error box stating ;

c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
the ntvdm cpu has encountered an illegal instruction
cs:0f3c ip:ec38 op:f0 c3 ac b4 f0 chose close to terminate......

on the nailfix screen it could not find nail.exe & drpmon.dll

Hi hornabythanger. Ok, I think the screen is just an overlay on the desktop and the infection is gone so let's clean up the desktop.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as fixdisplay.reg :

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=hex:00,00,00,00
"NoActiveDesktop"=dword:00000000
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000
"ClassicShell"=dword:00000000
"NoThemesTab"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

Locate fixdisplay.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer normally. Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab, then the Customize button and then the Web tab. Uncheck all of the items listed and then delete all of the entries except My Current Home Page.

Save the changes and make any other changes you want to your desktop properties.

Cheers.
