I have/had a virus that i first noticed when mcafee gave me an error msg saying i needed to reinstall security center. i uninstalled and went to redownload and noticed i couldn't connect to the download site. then i noticed i couldn't connect to any antivirus type site. while searching for help i noticed that when clicking on google links i would be redirected. aside from not being able to get any antivirus and being redirected my computer worked fine.

i used a diff computer to research my problem, managed to run malewarebytes by changing the name of the file, that got rid of some infected files and cured the redirecting issue. I was then able to reinstall mcaffee and run my scan. it found more infected files and deleted them. i was then left with two files both named NTOSKRNL-HOOK that would get deleted and then reappear the next scan. I then ran combofix (did so before coming to this site, sorry) which seems to have gotten rid of them. my mcaffee scan now comes up clean. I thought I had fixed it but wanted to make sure there weren't any hidden infections so when i found this forum i posted in the "am i infected" threads and was told to run programs such as kaspersky (which resulted in a completely blank log) and gmer which froze in the middle of scan and resulted in a blue screen which said windows is shutting down and showed some memory being copied (?? i didn't have time to read it all) and then my computer restarted. I was then told to post here. I believe the virus i have came from a fake divx codec. Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

I have not done anything to my computer to try to fix it since my last post, other than running my McAfee virus protection. I also haven't had any problems or signs of a virus since then, i'm just worried about deeply infected files that may still be lurking in the background.

Hi again,

That's the one I wanted to see :thumbup2:

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck MSN toolbar if it's offered there.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DDS::
BHO: {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No File
BHO: {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - No File
TB: {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - No File

Registry::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner as instructed in the screenshot here. If you get a message that latest Java must be installed "enable" the Java add-ons in IE7. Do that using "manage add-ons" from the IE7 toolbar.

Post back its report, a fresh dds.txt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

Since doing all of that, some pages in Firefox aren't being displayed right... is there a java setting i need to change somewhere? it says enabled in the settings...

this is what these forums look like, and nothing happens if i click on quick reply...

Hi

Have you tried reboot and see how the pages appear after that?

There is one false detection made by ComboFix. We have to restore it.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DEQUARANTINE::
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\windows\system32\msconfig.exe.vir

QUIT::

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post contents of C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt file back here.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

yes i've tried restarting... the pages still look funny. and when i click on certain links that open something on the existing page, they don't work. does that have something to do with scripts?

Restoring the file went ok. Good.

Do the sites appear correctly with IE? If they do, I'd recommend reinstalling Firefox (backup bookmarks first by following this set of instructions).

Good. In that case I think this one is ready :thumbup2:

Let's uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN (if run command is not visible, use window button+R combination to open runbox)
  • Now type "c:\users\mandy\Downloads\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

I will do this when i get home from work in a couple hours...

When I ran the last scrip you had me do, the one to unquarantine msconfig... i had downloaded an updated version of combofix and since FF wasn't working i used IE which saved it to my desktop. i still have the one that is in my download folder, do i need to repeat the above process for each one?

No. It's enough to do uninstalling once. You may delete that file on your desktop :thumbup2:

Just make sure one is in c:\users\mandy\Downloads folder.
