Hi there, I am new to these forums. I have recently encountered some problems with my PC. My homepage has changed, I have processes running that were never there before, and my PC seems to be a little slower. I have tried running adware, spysweeper, spybot for spyware programs and they just cant get rid of my problems. I ran symantec's scan for viruses and it did not find anything wrong with my PC. I tried to run housecall and it just shuts down my IE. I did end up getting housecall to run in safe mode, but that didn't help neither. Can someone please help me with my problem. My log file from hijack this is posted below. Thank you very much!

I have looked around, and this seems to be a problem that more people than me are experiencing. Thanks.

Hello StonedCOLD and welcome to theBC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

WinXP Remove Service 2

Now we need to remove a service.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the Network Security Service service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
Open Notepad and Copy/Paste the contents of the quote box below into the new document:

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
  & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
  ("Select * from Win32_Service Where DisplayName = 'Network Security Service'")
For Each objService in colListOfServices
If objService.State = "Stopped" then
MsgBox "Stopped Already"
Else
objService.StopService()
MsgBox "Service Stopped"

End IF
  objService.Delete()

Next

MsgBox "Done"

Save the file to your desktop as remsvc.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the remsvc.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. You'll get a messge box saying 'Stopped Already' and then another message box saying 'Done!'.

Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tantq.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tantq.dll/sp.html#93256

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\tantq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiqy32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\kclqykwa.exe
c:\windows\system32\mfnmhb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\windd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3la32.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #7

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #8

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal v1.06, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:

Well it seems like housecall now works, and my homepage actually remains.

Doesn't seem like very much is wrong at all anymore.

When I was running going through all the steps you told me to do, I did the remsvc.vb script: c:\documents and settings\bouch\desktop\remsvc.vbs
Line: 14
Char: 3
Error: Generic Failure
Code: 80041001
Source: SwbemObjectEx

I believe this was to get rid of SP2, which I didn't have in the first place.

I ran housecall with no problems (no viruses)

I ran Panda and it came up with like 80+ errors, this is the log:

hey StonedCOLD. When you run the online scans you have to make sure that you set the options to disinfect the problems found. They are worded differently on the different sites. Otherwise they just run a scan and report what they find but don't so anything to the infected files themselves.

Post back a new HijackThis log so I can see where we're at.

Cheers.

Hi StonedCOLD. The log is looking pretty good but I wonder about the mirc file. Mirc is a valid irc client but it is not ususally in that folder. Let's check that file out.

Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:C:\Program Files\hix\mirc.exe
Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Cheers.

Here is the information on the scan of that file in question.

Hi StonedCOLD. If mirc is the irc client that you installed then everything looks good. Good job in cleaning things up! How are things running? Any other problems?

I do not see any anti-virus or firewall applications running onthis machine. that is a very dangerous way to surf the web because you leave your machine totally vulnerable to every infection out there. i strongly recommend that you review th information below and install one of the free anti-virus programs and one of the free firewall programs to protect your computer.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
