Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hello.

There does not appear to be any malware. Perhaps too much memory is being used. Let's use HijackThis to disable some startup items next round.

Download, Install, and Save Log with HijackThis
  • Download the installer HERE onto your desktop and double click it.
  • You may be asked for confirmation for running an executable file. Select Run.
  • You will be asked choose the install location. Please leave it at the default:
    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • Select Install.
  • The installation process should only take a few seconds. A shortcut named HijackThis will be created on your desktop so there will be no need to access the HijackThis program directly. The HijackThis window will pop-up after the installation.
  • Click Do a System Scan and Save a Log File.
  • The scan will complete in a moment and the log will pop-up.
  • Copy the contents of the log into your next post.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Use HijackThis to Remove Uneeded Startup Entries
Programs that run automatically at startup can take up memory, causing your computer to be slow. Many of these entries are not needed.

Below is a list of entries in your HijackThis log that can be removed safely. Below each entry, you will find a brief description of it. Some are up to preference.

To remove entries you do not want, open HijackThis (if you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select Run As Administrator), select "Do a system scan only", put a check mark next to those entries and select "Fix checked".

If you experience any issues after removing any items, use the Backup feature to restore the items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Kernel and Hardware Abstraction Layer] KHALMNPR.EXE

Restart your computer.

Any improvement?

Hello Panda, My laptop is much faster, I only use it for web browsing, outlook and office, everything else I do not care, so I am glad all the rest of the items were removed. You were saying that there perhaps too many programs were starting and I suppose that this is also related to the RAM. The only "tweak" that I have made to the system was the paging file size, I have 1 G, and I set the paging size to minimum 1521, maximum 4,500. Is it possible to be another cause for my problem?

Best Regards,
Cocuixtle

Hello.

Freezing is a random thing that is hard to find the cause of.

Does it occur after the HijackThis lines were removed.

Hello Panda, so far, there has not be any other crash. and any application now starts much faster, I would think that chances are that the crashes will be reduced a lot. What are your suggestions for the page file size )virtual memory, if I have a 1 G RAM?
Best Regards,
Cocuixtle

Hello.

For a 1GB RAM, you should have 1.5 GB of paging file.

Hello Panda, About some months ago, my laptop did not crash at all, this problem has been recently and is about every other day. If it crashes, lets say in the next ten days, and from now on, I see that it is again crashing continually, Do I open a new topic or do I reply to this one?
Best Regards,
Cocuixtle

Hello.

Let's leave this topic open for awhile and keep an eye on it.

We would ask you to start a new topic if it were a distinct separate problem, which it may not be here.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello Panda, the freezing events are less frequent, still, there are some. I think I have found a pattern that may be related to my DVD drive. programs that try to access the DVD, sometimes are not responding. If removing programs from the start has helped, I do not care remove even more (if you suggest), so, let me know if you want me so send the hijack again, since some of the items that you suggest me to remove from the hijack, also I remove the program, since I did not want the program at all. What are your thoughts?, regards,
Cocuixtle

Hello.

Last time we removed about all that was safe to remove.

What programs try to access the CD drive?

The Panda
