Hi,

I just noticed that all my system restore points from March 17 and before were mysteriously deleted. I haven't authorized anything like this, nor is my C drive full.

I scanned with One Care online scanner, no malware. Then SuperAntispyware, one tracking cookie. Then MalwareBytes, nothing. Then Avira Rootkit scan and complete scan, nothing nasty, but some 30+ warning/unscanned items.

So.

I am "assuming", (ah, that ass out of you and me thing going on here) :thumbup2: that I am clean but wondered if someone can check this HJT log to be sure.

Automatic updates are on.
Windows Firewall on.
Comodo BOClean is on.
Avira is my AV.
Pretty careful in my browsing habits.

System info
Windows XP Pro SP3
Intel®
Pentium® 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.94 GHz, 3.00 GB of RAM

There, I think I remembered everything. And now the HJT log.

Thanks
Teri

ETA: I also use Hostsman, thanks. T

Hi jterij,

Sorry for the delay the forums here at BC are always very busy and we do are best to keep up. Since
it has been a while since you posted your hijackthis log I would like to see a new log.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Thanks

Hi syler, I appreciate the help,

Hi, took me a couple tries because I forgot to turn on the external harddrives, and then running it again wouldn't bring up the info log, so I system restored to yesterday

Hello

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Java™ 6 Update 11
Java™ 6 Update 7

Additional instructions can be found here if needed

Install ERUNT
This tool will create a complete backup of your registry. After every reboot, a new backup is created to ensure we have a safety net after each step. Do not delete these backups until we are finished.
  • Please download erunt-setup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click erunt-setup.exe. Follow the prompts and allow ERUNT to be installed with the settings at default. If you do not want a Desktop icon, feel free to uncheck that. When asked if you want to create an ERUNT entry in the startup folder, answer Yes. You can delete the installation file after use.
  • Erunt will open when the installation is finished. Check all items to be backed up in the default location and click OK.
You can find a complete guide to using the program here:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

When we are finished with fixing your computer (I will make it clear when we are), you can uninstall ERUNT through Add/Remove Programs. The backups will be stored at C:\WINDOWS\erdnt, and will not be deleted when ERUNT is uninstalled.

Download and Run OTMoveIT
  • Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer to your desktop. If you have already used the program, there is no need to download a new one.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below. Do not copy the word "code".
:reg
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{8130b971-d9f2-11dd-825a-7a8020000200}]

:files
E:\m.exe

:commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Close all open windows expect OTMoveIt.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose
copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key. Navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest ".log" file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
The post back here with:
  • OTMoveIt results
  • Kaspersky report
  • Fresh Rsit log
Thanks

HI,
Thanks for getting back to this

I did the first(java install and uninstall) steps

Then rebooted.

Then I did the erunt and then OTMove steps but forgot to turn back on my external HD before I did so here is the first log and now I will redo those. Also one of the external hd that were plugged in for my original posts/previous logs has gone with my husband out of town for a couple weeks, so we'll have to continue without it.

Thanks

OK after more than five download hours and nearly that many scan hours the Kaspersky scan found nada. However I let it scan overnight and just checked it this morning, and my aircard was disconnected so maybe it didn't finish? Below is what it came up with. Let me know if I need to redo. Then below that is the new RSIT log, then the info log(same one?)

Thank you

Scan statistics
Files scanned 233740
Threat names 0
Infected objects 0
Suspicious objects 0
Duration of the scan 04:12:52
Start scan
Scan is running(99%)
Click the area that you want to scan in left part of the window. The scan will start automatically as soon as you select a scan area.
Last start: Saturday, Apr 11, 2009 23:05:42
Status: complete
Please wait, the scan may take a long time depending on the size of the selected scan area. You can continue browsing in a new Web browser window.

Hi jterij,

Download and Run FlashDisinfector
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden file named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

Next

I can not stress how important it is that you use a third party Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is
succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Windows firewall is good for blocking inbound connections but it does not block
outbound connections. So if Malware manages to get onto your computer it will be able to send data out when it wants.
Here are some free firewalls I would recomend, only install one of these.

Zone Alarm
comodo Note: Only Install the Firewall as a standalone if you already have an AntiVirus installed on your computer

After you install the third party firewall, please disable your Windows firewall. Please go to My Computer >> Control Panel >> Windows Firewall and choose Off (not recommended) option. Then please click Apply and Ok.

Then please post back with a new Rsit log, no need to post the old info.txt again.

Thanks

Quick question, that flashdisinfector file was recognized by avira as a being/containing WORM/Generic.4084 [worm] almost before it hit my desktop. Is this a known false positive? And should I run it anyway?

Thanks
Teri

ETA: I currently have it quarantined, but I had to tell it three times before it quit alerting me.

This is indeed a false positive it is safe to run, you should disable AntiVir before doing so.

Finished the above, had to run the flashdisinfector a few times to cover all my plugins as I don't have enough USB ports. Below is the requested log.

Thankyou!

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Now navigate to this file which is on one of your removable drives:

E:\m.exe

Next

Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as.
In the box that opens type in Regfix.reg for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select
all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{3c20fe73-dc1f-11dd-8264-7a8020000200}]

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Now locate Regfix.reg on your desktop and double click it. Select Yes when it prompts you then Ok

Then please post back with a fresh Rsit log and let me no how your computer is running.

Ok

The E:\ drive is my asus cd drive. Unless there is a disc in there, it comes up with nothing. However when I did all my previous scans above, there was not a disc in there, hasn't been for several weeks actually, till today when I was double checking that it actually is the optical drive. But it does behave weirdly (is that even a word) on this one, when it is empty when I right-click, explore, it opens the explore window even if there is no disc inserted, whereas my dvd drive and virtual drives if I right-click, explore with no disc inserted/mounted it says please insert disc into drive whatever. However there is no m.exe or any other file there, even with hidden and system files showing.

Will wait for reply before continuing with the remaining regedit instructions

Thanks

Eta: perhaps I should open up the case and disconnect/reconnect the E:\ drive?
