sadly my introductory post is a yelp for help, so "hello", and thanx much for creating such a phenomenal forum. on to my sob story and cynicism...i trusted the consumer version of McAfee (Security Center) only to be hit with a Vundo!grb trojan... oh joy. McAfee isn't all bad, the corp edition of the anti-virus works swimmingly... but i digress...

i'll try to make this brief, i know you all have a ton of folks to save besides me...

symptoms:
  • multiple popups from i.e. while only browsing with firefox (as in 30-40 of 'em)
  • buffer errors causing explorer.exe to crash when previewing vid file
  • slow browsing, some web apps fail
  • windows update disabled
  • full scan w/ MSC shows NOTHING
i read the topics here and here but honestly, i know enough to be dangerous (to myself) and would rather listen to the gurus than get to it and ruin the pc. full restores aren't fun. i've dl'ed dds, hjt, and combofix, but only used dds, it's been yrs since i've had to read and fix an hjt log.

any help from you all will be seriously appreciated... thanx in advance for your help

please let me know if you need more info from me. -dw

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

koan - thx for reopening the thread.

ok, i tried to fix it myself & only got rid of the symptoms instead of the problem. the mother beast yet lives...i didn't even give it full effort b/c i didn't have the time.

first, new experience after my attempt:
  • multiple i.e. popups --> non-existent
  • buffer offerflow still exists when previewing vid file (avi), mcafee references dllhost.exe in sys32. still causes explorer.exe to crash
  • browsing is better, web apps failure is intermittent
  • windows update --> enabled now, not sure if this had anything to do with it
  • full scan w/ MSC still shows NOTHING
  • on boot, i get three RunDLL error dialog boxes looking for dll's that i deleted (that apparently have returned) from C:\ProgramData (screenshot attached)
now: details of the attempt at "cleaning".
  • cleaned temp files, temp inet files, cookies, etc (using ccleaner)
  • full v scan of pc (using msc)
  • booted to cli safe mode
  • deleted wierd dll's i found in the pseudo-hjt log in my first post (that apparently have returned)
  • rebooted
  • attempted to use fport but vista hp wouldn't allow it without admin privs
  • installed tcpview but couldn't see outgoing/incoming port info
  • gave it a rest
i at least got rid of the i.e. popups and stopped it from bogging down my proc & nic, but whatever the parent process is, it's still looking for the hatchlings...

hope that's enough information... please let me know if you need more. (attach.txt not posted until further instructs)

thx in advance for the rescue
-dw

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

Those missing DLL's are part of the leftovers from a malware infection.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

After the reboot, if those three popups are still happening, then

Please download RunScanner
  • Save it to a folder you create such as C:\Runscanner (this assumes Windows is installed on your C: drive).
  • Launch Runscanner by double-clicking runscanner.exe within the C:\Runscanner folder.
  • Vista users must also click Continue to open Runscanner when prompted by User Account Control (UAC)
  • Check Beginner Mode
  • Click Scan computer
  • Your will see a "Runscanner scan in progress" window displayed while Runscanner scans your system
  • At the conclusion of the scan, save the run file called runscanner.run to your documents folder or directly to the Runscanner folder. This is the file you will need to upload.
  • A runscanner.log file will automatically open in Notepad. Just close the Notepad window because, it is ONLY the runscanner.run file that we are interested in.
  • Next, zip up the runscanner.run file that you just saved.
  • I want you to upload the zipped runscanner.run file as an attachment in your next reply
  • To do that choose "Additional Options" under "Post Reply"
  • Browse to the zipped RUN file location and then click the "Post" button to attach the file.
  • I will review the run file, and then upload it back to you with items marked for deletion.
  • Please await my directions and the returned RUN file, and do not delete anything in the interim

thx for your time hoov

i'll make sure to follow your instructs to the letter, no sense in pleading for help if i didn't :thumbup2: ... besides it's the best way to learn. and i typically restrict my insolence to asking first before deviating from instruction... trust me, if i'm asking for help... i listen.

my repair actions (some redundant from above):
  • cleaned temp files, temp inet files, cookies, etc (using ccleaner)
  • full v scan of pc (using msc)
  • booted to cli safe mode
  • deleted wierd dll's i found in the pseudo-hjt log in my first post (that apparently have returned)
  • attempted to use fport but vista hp wouldn't allow it without admin privs
  • installed tcpview but couldn't see outgoing/incoming port info (and didn't have time to learn to configure)
  • installed lavasoft adaware pro (never used - adwatch not enabled)
  • enabled admin account to run fport

k... first bit of insolence, hope this doesn't put at 'hair pulling' already:

gist: would like to refrain from installing redundant apps (if possible). i installed lavasoft adaware pro 2007 after the onset of this thing. is mbam very different and/or better than adaware? could we achieve the same results with adaware? even if they're the same, and it's just a situation where you can provide better support with mbam, i'll happily uninstall adaware and plug mbam in...just checki

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is different than AdAware. In fact all the programs we use as a rule are a little bit different. None of them cover the same items. That is why even for a problem that appears the same on the surface, helpers will have widely different procedures to remove it. There is some overlap, but there is no avoiding that.

update:
  • MBAM found 7 infections (3 reg keys, 3 reg values, 1 file)
  • MBAM cleaned all 7 after reboot.
  • the popups haven't returned, and the odd DLL's haven't reappeared.
  • pc appears to run a bit faster at first glance
