Hi,

I have an unusual problem. I'm guessing that my sytem is infected with something that is blocking windows updates, as well as my Mcafee updates. As well as this it appears to be blocking most spyware / malware removal sites and has let me install Malwarebytes (from a USB drive) but not run it.

Th funny thing is, apart from the occasional browser freeze or crash it hasn't really made a nusance of itself. No redirects, or anything so far.

To tell the full story, I have recently formatted my C: drive and reinstalled windows etc (my system was getting slow and buggy, si I copied any important stuff to my second (D:) drive and did the full reinstall. That was yesterday, I spent the rest of the day reinstalling sowtware and making sure that all of my drivers were up to date and running ok. I notices an error message when trying to access my C: drive saying something about "RECYCLER\S". After following some advice online and installing "autorun eater" the message at lease has gone away.

However I went online to update to WMP11, and the download was blocked. As is Microsoft Auto Update, my Mcafee updater, access to Malwarebytes.org, and most other sites that could bail me out. I then spent the rest of the afternoon googling my issue and trying the following fixes:

SDFIX,
Malwarebytes (from a usb pen) won't open or update, didn't work when I renamed the .exe either,
DrWebLive (loaded from a bootdisk and ran a full scan with nothing found), I also ran a full scan with Mcafee and found nothing,
tried a few online scans that were suggested and once again the sites or scans were blocked.

I did consider wiping my c: drive again, but having already wasted a day and a half doing that I thought I'd ask the experts instead.
As I said the occasional freeze or crash is annoying, but I have a bad feeling If I don't manage to sort this it'll get worse.

As per the welcome note, I've attached a DDS log, but will be happy to run any other tests that you can suggest.

Thanks in advance

Andy

PS, I appreciate that the virus may have stowed on my D: drive, but would do anything to avoid having to format both drives.

********

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K
