Well I am probably your worst nightmare. I am not very pc literate but I try things anyway. Playing a game called Warhammer online and it was running slow and every time I tryed to download drivers I have to uninstall them because it makes whole system unstable. So I downloaded Driver Detective from a normally trusted site and then all hell broke loose.

I have reg Mechanic, PC tools Antivirus, and spyware doctor. PC tools detected a worm, was removed, dont really think its gone. Spyware detected trojans galore and said it removed them but didnt after reboot and scan again. Reg mechanic sys it fixes regitry but doesnt. Pagesytem file says a gazillion bytes being used. Spent hours trying to clean these things with limited results. ALL RETORE POINTS HAVE BEEN WIPED!

Explore randomly turns on to weird sites like search family.com and explorer just turns it self on and goes to blueskyadagen... and is contstantly clicking in the back ground.

When I rebbot error pop up on display of desktop cannot find C:\windows\system32\sms.exe and cannotlad or run C:\windows\system32\sms.exe

Also I had a good amount of memory free to enble me to play the game but now all that free memory is gone and says disk space in my c drive is nill so i had to uninstall game just so i could try to fix it.

I dont know how to create a log to show you guys. Please help me get all my Memory back, remove spyware ,trojans, and worms if possible. THX for all your help in advance.

Welcome to BC Toso. Please get a log from MBAM.

Next run MBAM:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.35) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

When Desktop came back online error for cannot find C:\windows\system32\sms.exe came on again. Don't know what to do about that. In the fix it had a number of system32 errors to correct maybe it just couldnt correct this one. Should I run a Deep scan with MBAM?

Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.

A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads.

To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.

Create a new folder on your hard drive called Autoruns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)

Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.
Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries.
When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.
Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.
Right-click on the entry and choose delete.
Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

As far as the next step goes Super Anti Spyware is not downloading properly and does nothing after install. I click icon and nothing also tried alternate startup and nothing. Tried installing it 3 times still same problem. Is there a mirror or someting where i could get it? I wont proceed to next step until you give the ok.

Also Memory is back and I now have 18g of free space like I should THANK YOU !!!!

some other problems that i am sure are my fault as I was originally trying to fix these problems is that window update says "null" and wont work thought might be internet explorer so I downloded Explorer 8 still same problem but this is minor and might be fixed by fixng the other items

What is more troubling is that I went to install my game again now that most errors are fixed and memory is back and my DVDrom doesnt read the disk nothing happens when i put disk in. If i got to RUN from start and try manual install it says please insert disk basically saying it shows no disk in the drive. I am assuming I deleted something I shouldnt have when I was trying to fix Problem on my own

That being said THIS IS THE BOMB sight and i will reccomend it to everyone I know!!

Just a few more problems and my PC will be good as new. THX for your help Boopme and keep it coming almost at the fnish line i think.

Hi, thanks, So ATF ran that's good. Those items in the MBAM scan we will get in our last step.
Here's another link for SUpER, http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-...4-10523889.html

Are you getting this error with windows update?
Windows Update Error 0xC80003FB

There is a fix for the Windows Update Error 0xC80003FB VD issue, but I don't know it. Ask that one in the XP forum.

They said i should probably reinstall operating system if I cant get rid of these trojans. Ill wait for your advice. Cant find my xp disk anyway lol... Its been years since I have had to install OS.

Ill wait for your advice Boopme...

Ok let's try one more way. Then run MBAM and SAAS if it will. You have SAS downloaded already. Open MBAM and update it (it;s at 1920)
Now shut off your Antivirus and can you disable the "wise Wizard"? now try running the scans.

Ok when I googled Wise Installer it appeared to be a 3rd party application. Perhaps do a Search of your drive for the term Wize or Wise and see what it returns.. Windows uses the Windows installer.

Now let's run SDFix and maybe a rootkit scan after that.

Please print out and follow these instructions: "How to use SDFix". <- This program is for Windows 2000/XP ONLY.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan.
  • When done, the SDFix report log will open in notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.
  • Be sure to renable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.
-- If the computer has been infected with the VirusAlert! malware warning from the clock and the Start Menu icons or drives are not visible, open the SDFix folder, right-click on either the XP_VirusAlert_Repair.inf or W2K VirusAlert_Repair.inf (depending on your version of Windows) and select Install from the Context menu. Then reboot to apply the changes.
